Baby in a bilingual family question

I love that this topics come up and actually gonna get my Oh to read this. I'm goan(well my parents were from there and i was born and raised over here) but my parents never taught me my mother tongue and i hated it. Now my Oh is Portuguese and speaks to all his family in Portuguese. Now me and all his family and my family too are like he needs to teach Leandro Portuguese but he's all like Hell get confused he'll pick it up when he's older. But i don't want it to be that way. I would love Leandro to be bilingual xxx

Funny I know a girl whose dad is Portugeese and also haven't taught her the language while she was little. She hates it as she can't speak to his side of the family and tries to teach herself now but it's obviously not the same.

One of the main reasons why I think it's important for G to learn Russian is that he can speak to his grandparents and aunties from my side.

It's definitely so much easier to teach them while they are little! Xx

I deffo think you should start now as it will be harden when he is older and he may nit want to learn. Ohs friend is italian and his gf english, they only spoke english to their lo for the first few years and when she was about two realised theyd made a mistake and started talking in the two languages, now at 4she completelymrefuses to speak italian. Sooner rather than later for sure imo!

A2M go to a class at a local college, im pretty sure most do language courses in so many different ones. that or rosetta stone is a great learning programme you can teachyourself any language you want then

My friends both speak Russian and their girl speaks only English now but understands both. She in at nursery 4 days a week so its having a big impact. I say dont worry too much about Russian being the dominant language, he will be surrounded by English and you will soon find you will have to put morw effort in keeping up his Russian.
I speak Russian to my son and plan on taking him to see my parents at least once a year so he can be in a Russian speaking environment.
I am also thinking about starting Russian group for kiddies in SW London, i know of quite a few families with LOs.
Good luck to your hubby, Russian isnt an easy language. My DH did 4 years of having lessons 2 times a week.

Russian group sounds like a great idea! Shame it's too far from us!

G won't really be surrounded by English too much as I am not planning to send him to a nursery before he is at least 2. My parents will take care of him while I am at work before then. And they, of course, will be speaking only Russian to him... But of course he will pick up English one way or the other at some point :) just hope his daddy will not feel excluded!

^^^ my friends little boy was surrounded by only italian until he went to school at 5 (he did two days at nursery) he picked up english no problem and is completely flurent!
