are doctor's tests usually the same result as home tests?

This might seem silly-

After my 3 pound shop tests and a clearblue digital test all came back positive at the weekend there, I've now put a urine sample into the doctor's today to be tested. The thing is, I'm worried that the doctor's test will be negative and that I'll find out I'm not really pregnant after all. I've wanted another child for at least three years, so I was really excited to finally get positive home tests. I'm worried my "bubble is about to burst".

Why do doctors take so long to test anyway? I mean, at home you can test in minutes! Now I have to wait days...

Ach, the whole waiting is what's annoying about pregnancy. You can't wait for a positive result, to have that confirmed, to have your first scan, to get into the safer 2nd trimester, then for the baby to be born...it's all waiting and fraught with worry (or is that just me?).

Has anyone else been as neurotic? This is my 3rd pregnancy too

Congrats :cheer:

Yes they are the same, my Dr would test at the clinic if i paid for it or they send it away and it's free, but if you had a positive result with a clearblue then im sure they will tell you it's positive and you are pregnant which you know deep down anyway, Just relax and enjoy your 3rd pregnancy im sure everything is fine

I think everyone worries that they are not really pregnant, i do and i have my scan tomorrow i keep thinking what if there is nothing there even though i have herd the heartbeat, its natural to worry and perfectly normal :D

Thanks, Paula. I know I'm being ridiculous.

I remember feeling the same at my first scan too, compounded by the fact that the sonographer couldn't find my baby! He was in there (he'll be 10 years old in 2 weeks), but they had to do a vaginal scan (they said because I had a 'tilted uterus', though they found my next baby ok).

It's so exciting, getting your scan, isn't it? I bet you can't wait! I hope that they manage to get a nice clear photo for you tomorrow.

xxx

Yes i can't wait and im sure they will get a nice clear piccy for me to post up and show everyone here :D

Don't worry i think everyone goes through what you are going through at the moment and thinking am i arn't i .... we wouldn't be normal if we didn't worry like this ...

I also have a son who will be 10 in 4 days :D this is my 4th and i still worry so you are not alone, my daughter was 5 on monday and my youngest son is 20 months... i have been busy and we are hoping for a little girl to even the numbers up, but wont be finding out the sex of this baby as we want a nice surprise...

Just enjoy the fact you are pregnant and wait for the Dr to confirm what you already know xx

yeah the doctors tests are the same, this time i done about 6-8 tests at home and the doctor still wanted a sample to send off to be tested to see if i was pg

Thanks, Sarah - I noticed that you're almost full-term. You'll soon be meeting your baby - I bet you can't wait!

Best wishes,
Wendy

yeh with Eva I kept thinking that the doctor would say but you aren't pregnant every time I gave a sample etc. It's such a weird feeling. I know that I am pregnant now but it hasn't sank in properly yet!! I still feel like i'm doubting it slightly - just because you imagine people thinking that you are nuts if it turns out you aren't pregnant after all. whups sorry it was just wind

Hun just wanted to say that firstly yes the doctors tests are the same as ones you'll get from ebay, boots, tesco etc so don't fret, if they have done a blood test that's even more sensitive!! :) Just also wanted to say that I'm now 18 weeks pregnant I've got a bump the size of England already and baby wiggles non-stop all day long - still I have days where I don't feel or think I'm pregnant so try to enjoy it and look forward to that first scan, it's amazing and you'll soon start to believe things then!!

so ifu get a posictive home pregnancy and a negative doctor test are u pregnant??

Well Nicola, my doctor's test was also positive - I'm seeing a midwife for my first appointment tomorrow. And you're right - this is my 3rd pregnancy and already, I'm worried I've imagined the whole thing. I keep wanting to take another test to reassure myself. It's crazy. But I felt like this first time around, even waiting for the sonographer to do my first scan I wondered whether I'd imagined it all. I've read a few women on here saying similar things (so it's not just me!).

Chezzabell, I think tests depend on the sensitivy to Hcg levels. Some home tests are as as sensitive as 20 mIU these days, whereas others are only 50 mIU, or even 100 mIU. This means that if you use a lower sensitivity test at home, you still might get a 'negative' result if, say, your doctor uses one which only traces double the amount of the pregnancy hormone (hcg) in your urine. Then the doctor's test would not show a positive till at least a few days later as the hcg levels double every couple of days. You can 'phone the helpline on the leaflets given on most home pregnancy tests to ask what the sensitivity of the test is and then you could perhaps ask your doctor about the sensitivity of the test s/he uses to compare them.

I asked this question originally because I was worried, even after 4 positives at home, that I wasn't "really" pregnant :D

wendy thanks for ur reply, i will tell my friend she had a pos test and doc came back neg she is abit worried

Hi

With my first pregnancy i had gotten 2 positives then a negetive with the doctors one i think he thought i was crazy then after doing onemore i went back and he did it again a few days later and it was positive do i do think they can be wrong at the doctors so if you have a positive and are convinced you are then keep going back.
