Im not a mechanic or anything, but I change the oil & filter and sparks etc on my car, and put a new susspension on mine with my dad, and sorted out putting on my own wheels and spacers and kit (have to stress, fiat optional extra body kit not chavvy body kit PMSL) and ripped out the old sterios and re wired a new one in...........(sorry just wanted to brag about that as I was dead proud but none of my mates cared ha ha ha)

but my first thoughts would be an electrical problem.

When your lights are not on, does your brake light work when you apply the brakes?

When your lights are on, does your indicator (on the side you say is fault) work ok or cause any indifferences?

To me it sound like when you are applying the brake causing the brake light to come on it is interfearing with the wiring or the current somewhere that supplies the normal rear light, if this is the case, it should not be expensive at all to get fixed.

What make of car is it?

If it is not that, im not sure what else it could be, ill try and think!

its a ford fiesta.

indicator works fine, adn when the lights arent on the brake works as normal too,

its literally only the lights going off when i press it..

my car has fuses?

i really think i need to get some information about cars...

it shud come on the test...

god help me if i ever break down

me dad said that the other day... you cant rely on me all the time you know .... what are you gonna do if ur tyre goes flat and im not around...

well durrrrrrrr RAC!

I would have thought though that if a fuse had gone, the light would just not be working completley, not only when the brake is pressed - could be wrong though. I guess you could try pulling them all out and putting them back in - check them all to see if any connectors are broken.. Also you could (you might not feel confident) open your boot and see if you can get to the rear light, if you can, see how easy it is to get in to (for example mine is just some screws so its simple, some are difficult) and then see if everything looks in the right place no loose wires or anything.

LOL at RAC comment, my dad used to say that to me and I used to say the same till I started messing about, and now im not so bad. However he now says I should get cover again as I cant be jacking my car up when pregnant lol

soudns like a job for daddy me thinks, thanks hun ill tell him what u said x

What year & model is it hun, Im just checking with some of my sources he he he

(also Haynes manuals are a god send for future reference lol!

i think there is one of them in the car :S

its an L reg dunno model is that 1.1 thingy?

I asked my mate who is a bit of an electricl guru with cars and he said what you have described sounds 99.9% to him like an electrical problem.

He said if you clean the connectors on the lights (using a rag and or cotton buds to get in hard to reach places) and re connect them this 'should' sort the problem. This is without him actually looking at the problem, if that doesnt work, your probably best popping in to an independant garage and getting them to have a quick check (while you wait)

Give the Haynes manual to your dad, it will tell him how to get to the light connectors.

Where abouts in west yorkshire are you from?

'oddmorden' more commonly known as todmorden...

just asked kris hes in the no with cars il pass over to him as i cant be bothered to type lol

he says

it a bad earth prob on the rear near the lights,
in simple terms there will be a cable prob from the lights leading to the inside part of the bodywork, and screwed in, this prob needs tightening or unscrewed, rub metal over with a scouring pad to smooth it and reveal more metal and tightening back up.

Garage should charge no more than half hour labour no parts.
does car have warranty?

it will either be that what iv said or what jennywren said there is no other reason unles you have changed bulbs recently and put the wrong type in

Thats pretty much what Rich said to you via MSN Lozzi.

He said its a simple job, wont take 5 mins at the workshop :D
