It looks like I will be alone for my labour.

My family live 400 miles away. My sister has 3 kids and a DH who works odd shifts so she can't make it. The one friend I would be comfortable enough to be there has just told me she will be abroad for 3 months with work around my due date.

I just wondered if anyone else had done this alone?

Also, I have been considering a homebirth. Do you think this makes much difference? I'm thinking at least this way I am comfortable in my own home and will have a midwife by my side the whole time. I'm worried that if I am in the hospital they will have other duties and I will be left alone a lot of the time.

Any thoughts?

I haven't been in this situation myself but I can see where your coming from on the home birth . With any luck you might get a really nice MW Who can stay with you.
Sorry I don't have any real advice but I hope you find something that works for you.

i had a home birth and had TWO midwives all to myself 100% of the labour! i heard at hosp theres only one MW between like 15 women and most of time they get left to fend for themselves! big up homebirths! good luck x x x

i think i might be on my own,my best mate offered, but she's got a 3yr old so it'd be ok as long as i go into labour @ weekend when her hubby's home.

my mum is an odd one, i 'think' she might volunteer, BUT after the way she's treated me and how little she wanted me to keep the baby im not sure i want her there :?

Hiya

I haven't been in ur situation so cant offer any advice sorry, but my friend was, she has 2 teenage girls and is a single mum and she asked for a homebirth as she didnt want to leave the girls (she doesnt really have any family around her) but she was told she wasnt aloud as there had to be 2 adults in the house. I would double cheak with you midwife hun but i can see where you are coming from with regards to having a homebirth

Have you thought of hiring a Doula?? There is loads of information on the internet, about them. I'm not sure what they cost, but it's always an option

Hello 'moresmiles'
Firstly, congrats on your pregnancy. :) How far along are you?

I am sorry to hear that you won't have anyone with you during this special time and would definitely not recommend being alone as a labouring women requires a lot of physical and emotional support.

I am a Doula and would definitely recommend hiring somebody to be with you through this special time.
Most Doulas charge around £600 - £800 depending on where you live, but there are lots of trainee Doulas around who can help out at a reduced rate of about £150 or some even do it for free to gain experience.

If you would like more info - please fee free to email me and I can help out wherever I can.
[If you are in London, I would love to help you out]
