Hi All,

My 5 month old boy was born 6lb 1oz and his weight gain has been steady, it's doubled his birth weight however I'm still concerned that it's a slow gain.

I generally see two health visitors, one is very nice and reassures me whenever I take him to get weighed... The other one, first time she saw him her first response was 'he's a narrow baby'. Last time I went, she weighed him again and said he's still not reached the average weight but he'll be starting solids soon so you'll see a difference.

He has previously been fussy with his milk intake but over past two months it's become much better. He used to struggle to finish off 5oz bottles.. He's now better ans taking 6/7oz

I've booked an appointment to see my gp but appointment is in three weeks time!!

I'm a natural born worrier, so I'll get worried at the slightest thing.

I just feel like it's my fault somehow, stuggling to stop worrying really :-( I've started him on baby rice and porridge and I have seen a slight difference.
I guess with me worrying and the HVs responses, it really doesn't help

Scrap the baby rice - no mutational value at all - :) go with porridge

HVs are so conflicting - if he's happy healthy and developing you've got nothing to worry about. Ignore the other HV- I'm sure your doing a grand job

He sounds similar to my eldest. He was really fussy with his feeds and wouldn't drink any more than the minimum of what he needed. Between 3 and four months he kept putting on weight but was dropping centiles. We eventually found out he had reflux, got that medicated and his milk consumption improved although he was still never one for large feeds, always little and often. We weaned him at four months, which was brilliant. He ate anything and everything, quickly moved onto three meals a day and was back gaining at the expected rate. He was a big baby, 9lbs at birth and every doctor and HV we saw regarding his feeding was still happy with his weight gain.

My youngest has been similar, but with knowing the symptoms of reflux we got him sorted with medication sooner. He still doesnt like big feeds, he's 12 weeks now and won't drink more than four or five ounces at a time. I'm happy to trust him to take what he needs as he is gaining weight, with lots of wet and dirty nappies. I am going to wean him at four months too.

With both babies having similar problems we are looking into the possibility of an allergy although my eldest has been having dairy products since six months with no obvious so god knows!
