I know I'm probably getting ahead of myself , but I've been worrying about how to dress a new born in the winter months. I'm due mid November and just haven't got a clue what to do when out an about. If it's cold do I need my rain cover on? If I dress little one in a snowsuit what do they wear underneath ? Is a vest, top , joggers and a coat too little ?

Thanks in advance !

Long sleeve vest, t-shirt or onesie, cardi or coat, layered blankets.

DS was born in Jan. I never had a snowsuit on him.
He is a warm baby though.

Feel the back of their neck every now and then, you'll soon get used to how many layers you need depending on the weather.

If it's windy-cold, you could use the rain cover to shield the wind. If it's just, calm-cold, I wouldn't put it on, but that's up to you. Xx

My boy was a January baby and admittedly is quite a warm baby. In the house he used to wear a vest and an all in one with the scratch mit's turned over if it was very cold and sometimes a cellular blanket over him (e.g. when asleep). Outside he wore this plus a thick cardigan and a hat. My pram had a newborn cocoon so I didn't both with a pram suit most of the time. Mind you, it wasn't the coldest of winters. The standard advice for dressing babies seems to be what you would feel comfortable wearing plus one layer. So if you are wearing trousers a top and a jumper, dress baby in the equivalent plus a vest or a coat. The cocoon counts as a layer as it goes up to the neck/shoulders. I was always told by midwives etc. that it is better to err on the side of caution. If they are too cold they'll let you know but too hot can be dangerous.

I've had a Mid November and a January baby.

My advice is one word - layers!!!!

November baby was born on literally the first cold day of a very long and cold winter. I used to dress him in long sleeve vest, socks, baby-grow, snowsuit and blankets. Rain cover if it was particularly cold and windy.

In the house it was long sleeve vest, socks and baby-grow.

Top tip is to get baby-grows with built in scratch mitts (Next, MotherCare, M&S) or use socks instead of actual mitts.... mitts don't tend to stay on!

January baby was the same but for less time.

Its crazy when you have a winter baby to imagine you'll ever be taking them out in just a onesie but the summer does eventually come round.

If you do a lot of outdoor walking a snow suit is really important, but if you do all your travel by car, then all you need are a couple of thick blankets and a jacket.

WSS. We live in Wales and it snowed for a week when we brought our eldest home, but I've never felt I needed a snow suit for him. Even if they're outside they're just going to be in the pram/pushchair with you that first winter so I would invest in a good cosy toes/snug for the pushchair instead. It's also much easier getting a baby in and out of one of those than it is getting a newborn in and out a snowsuit!

Just to mention as well watch coats and snow suits etc in the car seat. Too many puffy layers can end up in your babies seat belt in the car seat not actually being tight enough in an accident. I've found it better to get them in the car seat then pile blankets over them.

We don't have a car so it's a non issue for us but yep snowsuits / thick coats are a no-no in a car seat.

We used a snowsuit as we used a sling!!!
