Hi,

I am currently breastfeeding my 11day old son but in the evenings and through the night I don't seem to have enough milk and have been topping him up. Yesterday he fed from 17.00-00.00 and he was so hungry I gave him a 3oz bottle which he drank sooo quickly. Tonight I have just given him his bottle and again he has taken 3oz.

I'm not sure why I don't seem to have enough milk I always let him fed whenever and however long he wants too.

Any advice on what I can do to get more milk in the evenings? Or any advice at all.

Thanks xx

Hi,

When you say you were topping him up is this with formula or expressed milk? Unfortunately if you are supplementing with formula this can make supply issues worse. Its quite normal for babies to cluster feed in the evenings continually this helps increase your supply. Has he been gaining weight (after initial weight loss)?
Hopefully some other ladies will come along with some suggestions for increasing supply. Also may be worth visiting a breastfeeding drop in and seeing a breastfeeding counsellor. Good luck xx

If you're low on milk, just let him suckle anyway, and your breasts will get the signal to produce more milk, give it a few days and your supply should have increased to meet demand. Cluster feeding is normal.
Apparently eating porridge can help with milk supply.
I'd have a chart with a lactation consultant to put your mind at ease. Good luck :-)

Definitely echo what others have said about going to a bf group and speaking to a bf support councillor, my ones helped me loads! To boost supply I was told these things help: skin to skin, letting baby suckle as long as they like, Fenugreek herbal tablets, porridge oats, turkey breasts, make sure you drink plenty of water and eat well with extra snacks when feeding....

The cluster feeding is completely normal though. My boy was attached to my boob pretty much the whole evening (5/6pm-10/11pm) for the first 7-8 weeks of his life. I also worried I wasn't satisfying him and it's easy to doubt your body but try to persevere, especially if he is putting on weight okay? The cluster feeding does ease off eventually and you will start to get your evenings back!

Good luck xxxx

He was born 8lbs 8oz and at 11days he was weighed and he was weighing 8lbs 11ozs he initially lost 4% so he seems to be putting on weight well. He's topped up with formula but then I express as well. I'm seeing a lactation consultant on Tuesday I've paid for a lady to come out and visit me. I'd live to drop his evening bottle and just breast feed so started expressing after every feed yesterday.

I always breastfeed him as long as he wants then top him up, this is what they did in the hospital and I'm sure he's got used to the xtra milk and my body had got used to not producing as much.

Thank you for the replies I'm hoping Tuesday will shed some light on the situation. Xx
