my baby has been on cow and gate comfort since being born and he is putting on weight nicely with it but the last few weeks he really seems to be having a problem pooing. we are trying prune juice now and it helps a little but not much. he strains and cries so much when wanting a poo. the first bit that comes out is really big and solid usually with a bit of blood then the rest seems softer and it is like this whenever he poos now. we have to take off his nappy and help him poo the hard stuff out then all softer stuff gushes out easily. he does suffer colic but not everyday. we give infacol which seems to help a lot with that and the occasional dose of infant gaviscon in his bottle in the afternoons seems to settle his tummy for the evening. we have been to the doctors about it and asked the health visitor and people at the baby clinic and they just say give cooled boiled water which we do between feeds but has made no difference. i know a lot of people on here do swear by cow and gate comfort but does anyone know if a change of milk could make him less constipated if so which one?

I use SMA Whte and (touch wood) Evie has never been constipated. I'd be tempted to try another milk.

we have been using the Aptamil Easy Digest and never had and issues (moved from SMA due to constipation)

how would one go about changing over milk though? do you just change or do you have to introduce it gradually?

I had to help Moo poo when she was on SMA Gold but she's fine on C&G. Try giving colled boiled water or you may have to try switch formula hun  I didnt change gradually when I switched formulas, just switched straight away

just change- give it a few days and if it doesn't get better I would visit your GP again. I was so scared of switching milk but it was fine

thanks for all your quick replies everyone. i have been scared to switch milk incase it upset him further but now i know a lot of mums do it due to constipation problems i will definantly be giving it a try now. thanks all

Did your doctor suggest the prune juice? If not I think you should stop as your baby is so young.
I hope you find a solution and he feels better soon

the prune juice idea was something suggested on the internet and when we asked the doctor and health visitor about it they didn't seem to have anything to say about it. anyway we have stopped that now and after half an hour in tescos looking at all the different milks available we decided on trying heinz nurture for sensetive tummies and within a day of being on this his poo returned to normal :D i really wanted to try sma but the heinz nurture has something in it to help reduce constipation and as he seems prone to this i thought the heinz would be better and he sleeps better now and he isn't as colicy and his tummy is much more settled. overall he seems happier now. the only downside is they don't do ready made cartons but i can live with that as he is much happier.

its really weird as we all know as mums that milk can affect our babies and some cause problems and others don't. we have to find the right one. but the doctor, health visitor and anyone we have spoken to about his constipation never mentioned anything about changing milk. now he is ok again we still get asked how its going with his constipation as we really did complain to a lot of different people about it without a solution and we tell them we changed his milk and he is fine and all we get is a very confused look as if to say well the type of milk shouldn't make any difference. i just feel like these people know nothing sometimes.
