We like painting too, I had Will (5), Sophie (almost 2) and my neice Akira (18 months) doing a huge mural of hand and foot prints the other week. We used an old bed sheet to protect the kitchen floor and washable kiddie paints, stripped the kids down to vests and pants and let them run riot before sticking them all in the bath. Surprisingly there wasn't much mess.

Another favourite of William's for the last couple of years is decorating cupcakes. They only take a few minutes to knock up and when they're cooked I let him choose what colour he wants the icing to be and what decorations he wants to use and then leave him to it. (Well, steal a few to do myself to take my mind of the mess he's making lol.) The next lot we do we'll do with Sophie too as she's getting older now.

This Christmas just passed we made our own Christmas cards, Sophie really got into it and I just helped her with the glue. Close supervision is needed here though if you're using small shiny things as they tend to disappear into mouths if you're not careful.

Other things we enjoy doing is bike rides (never too early to teach them road sense - sophie pushes her pram at the moment), reading, play-dough, building things with duplo/lego and more reading. We've just joined the library and are planning to go to the story telling events.

She loves cleaning she helped me yesterday - she got a toy dyson for christmas from a friend which was ace but it won't go across my carpet for some reason before it jams stuck :eh: so will have to consider getting another.

I may have to brave this painting lark huh :oooo::lol:

Dec is 2 and heres some of the stuff he enjoys

Drawing
reading
Playing hide and seek
Helping around the house
making tents (with chairs and blankets, he will play in them for hours)
Building blocks
That little game where you play music and when it stops he has to stop
Mummy says.

Thats all I can think of at the moment. :)

If you are up for some "messy" play that doesn't involve paint i have a few ideas
This is my area at work at the minute.

Playdough is always a good one ( mix water(with food colouring) with plain flour), easy, cheap and you can throw it away, I always add glitter into mine.

Get some large trays with sides and fill with
DRY
Lentils
black eyed beans
pasta
rice
cheap cornflakes/rice crispies

give them measuring spoons, normal spoons, small dishes etc...
Ikea do some really cute little metal pans and colanders that our children love.

WET
Cooked pasta/spagetti
Shaving foam ( fantastic for mark making)
cornflour/ gloop mix- cornflour mixed with water-food colouring( hit it hard and is solid do it slowly and it stays liquid.).

If you do want to use paints, maybe an idea would be to cover your table with black bin bags, and the floor with cheapy shower curtains.
Squirt bits of paints directly on to the black bags and let them use there hands to make patterns, you can always stick paper over the top to make a print of the patterns.

You could always adapt some of these for the highchair.

If this isn't waht you want, give me a slap and i'll give you some more ideas
