I got a letter from my boss yesterday stating he would like a meeting with me today to discuss my recent abscence at work... I am so worried... i have been off ill for a few days signed off by doc with hypertension... and i have been up all nite thinking about it.. I am so worried now as i can feel my blood pressure rising every time i think of it.... and i can't afford for that to happen...... can i get a warning for being off so much due to pregnancy?

I used to work for our local authority at a time when they were cracking down on sickness and we had to record sickness during pregnancy for pregnancy related illness seperately and couldn't do anything,

Just checked online for you - from govt website

If the employee is sick during her pregnancy and the illness is not related to her pregnancy (e.g. she has a sprained wrist), then she should be treated in the same way as any other employee who is ill.

If she is ill with a pregnancy-related illness (e.g. pregnancy-related high blood pressure) and there is more than four weeks to go before childbirth, she should go on normal sick leave in the same way as any other employee who is ill. Note though that an employee cannot be dismissed for having a pregnancy-related illness, and any such absences must be recorded separately from sickness absence unrelated to pregnancy. If she is absent from work due to her pregnancy during or after the beginning of the fourth week before the EWC, the employer can automatically trigger the start of maternity leave. However, this is at the employers discretion. It is considered good practice not to trigger maternity leave for the occasional day off in that period.

So he can't put you onto disciplinary if what he's doing is adding up this sickness with previous sickness, nor can he take any action over this sickness

Thanx for that info.. my letter also stated that now any employee who has time off work has to have a meeting with their manager on their return.... so hes changed the company procedures also.. usually we have to just get the days authorised by our managers..... seems like i'm being the scapegoat cuz i'm pregnant.. no ones been pregnant since hes been the owner of the company.. so i think hes just making stuff up as he goes along.....

i have been downstairs and heard him discussing with his assistant certain legal legislations.. i think i'm gonna get a verbal/written warning...
i have had 8 days off (signed by doc) due to hypertension
5 days off with the flu...
2 days off with concussion (actually hit head hard at work.. ended up in hospital)....

I test computer software.. its very stressful at the moment..... as i have a massive workload... when i hit my head it was due to the toilet door handle falling off.. i pick up the screws off the floor and smacked my head on the disabled bar attached to the back of the door... i passed out for a minute...

Thanx.. i will.... I wouldn't be stressing as much is he would hurry up andhave the meeting with me.. i tried to get it for an earlier time but he said can't do it anytime before 12pm..... so 30 mins to go.....

they cant sack u anyway can they being pregnant?

do u have a union in your workplace and are u with them?

I don't think they can sack me.. i just think i'll get either a written or verbal warning.... if i do i am gonna go off about other people in the company not actually doing any work... reading novels all day... on phone to family and friends all day..... see how he likes that
No we don't have a union.. its only a very small company..... i've worked here for 8 years....

a warning ? what are they going to say? 'please stop being pregnant?' :? what a load of rubbish, your entitled to have sick leave that doesnt count as normal sick leave for pregnancy related stuff. I checked ours up when i was pg and it said the samething.

its just the start of a disciplinary procedurs of our company...... if i get 1verbal and 2 written warnings.. then they have a right to sack me.... not had any yet so i should be fine...

We are lucky and have a bonus scheme if we are not absent for a year we get vouchers to thank us for not calling in sick basically. I had to go for emergency anti-D one day, and the day after I had a kidney infection. Since both of these were pregnancy related, they were recorded on my file but don't count towards illness days so I still got my vouchers. I also get them next year if I'm not sick until June even though I'm on maternity leave until April because apparently they can't discriminate because I'm on mat leave so if I'm not ill April to June I get another load of vouchers :)

Don't let him give you a warning chick... and if he does give you something that you have to sign, say that you would like to take it away with you to read before you sign it. I did this with my boss once who I thought wasn't being fair... if you sign it you basically say you agree to it, but if you don't agree, don't sign it until you get it sorted. There would have to be a good reason for them to stop you 'taking it away with you to read over'.... and if they say no you have to sign it here and now, then they obviously realise they are in the wrong. Argh companies make me so angry sometimes and sorry to say it but I've found IT companies are never good to women. I got refused a job once because I was told they don't employ women of childbearing age - I wish I remembered the guy's name and taken it further.

back out of meeting....
basically... i have been given a verbal warning and my abscence is being monitored for the next 3 months... he may decided to place me elsewhere in the company...as my job is vital the company hes worried it will have an affect on the company
why do we cry so much when pregnant.. i just started blubbing for nothing.... calmed down a bit now...

That's really not on. Was it just the flu you were given the warning for as if they included the other 2 I would really kick off as they AREN'T ALLOWED to do that!!!

I'm so angry for you :x

all of the days..... being monitored now for 3 months.... i am worried now that if the doctor signs me off again for hypertension... i'll get it all again?

They cant do that, your allowed to have time off to be sick and your allowed time of for pregnancy related sick leave and that shouldnt count towards your sick leave. :| Your work sounds as bad as mine, they'll try anything on. :x grrrr

Hun this is not allowed, I would kick off big time about this as its so unfair you are being given a warning because you are pregnant!! I would speak to citizens advice and get some solid information as im pretty certain they cant do this to you. Grrrr :x

Worrying about being off-sick just makes things worse, you shouldn't have to be in a position where you are worrying whether you will get a warning if you go to your doctors. Your health and pregnancy is paramount concern.

Seriously you need to stick up for yourself on this one. If they're trying it on now, they still have a looooooonnnnnng time to go of your pregnancy for them to get another 2 warnings in. Don't let it go, I'll try and find some numbers or something for you. I'm a wimp and don't stand up to people but work and the law is a different matter.
