A question about milk coming in? EDT_ BF course discussion

yeh think we are quite lucky nikki, well actually i dont know if you are but i might guess you might come under this. but here our local hospitals have bfi, all the midwives are trained in bfing.. but it is still only 2 days.. i think that its great the welsh assembly is funding training. and by mid feburary i and the others on this particula course including cez who is a member here will be able to train people to be a breastfeeding counsellor, so it can only get better.. the more people trained the more knowledge gets learnt.

Unfortunatley I'm not in a bfi area - i was talking to a friend of mine earlier today actually (the one thats a trainee midwife) and i asked her how much they do on bf and how important it is in the course. She said they have to do - 6, 8 hour days of theory lessons, watch feeds in hospital and advise on positioning etc and do observed exams. thankfully she said its important to the course and that its standard training now.

If you don't mind me asking ,who are you training with? I'm in training to become a bfc and it a 3 year course (average) just to become a bf counsellor never mind teach others.

I think in my case it was the attitude of the midwife that did not help.
Hopefully things will really start to improve as Kelsey says :)

I think its explination and reassurance that a lot of midwives dont seem to have and give. hopefully things will turn around.

im training with neath port talbot birth center and i think partly with le leche league starting on the 15th of january.. not 100% sure what the course entails yet but i know its a 5 week course. and we were told that at the end we will be bf councellors and able to train others. the course is massivly expensive. only 5 people including 2 health care assistants (who will be infant feeding specialists at the end) are doing it. cant wait.. we have started ideas and some basics its really exciting because swansea has had such massive responces with peer supporters and councellors and such.

personally i think its time.. they just dont have enough to go around unfortunatly.. which is one of the things i brought up in a meeting. if they dont have the time then how would they like to solve it.. i said instead of training all 5 mums they should train 2 health workers who already help mums to bf when mws dont get the time.. and they can then go on to train other assistants and in a few months/years all the assistants will be trained sufficiantly enough to be infant feeding experts in our local hospital.

I cant't wait to do the course either lisa, as i really feel i can relate to alot of mothers out there. I do think all midwives and health workers should be trainer in Bfing. When i gave birth i saw 4 different MW's who tried to get kyla latched on, the last of the four was carol (the lady that has encourged me and lisa to do the course) the first 3 had failed and had been trying for many hours, i felt terrible as they were poking and proding lol, and didnt seem to know what they were doing. Carol within 2 mins had kyla latched on so that shows the others didnt have a clue.

I was transfered to neath hospital then for them to continue helping me. I saw 5 MW's (i even have their names written down because i wanted to complain about them) They were all useless at helping me breastfeed and once again kyla wouldn't latch on. I fell really patronised by most of them and that night i wrote down what i was going to say in the morning which was, i was putting kyla on the bottle coz i couldnt stand the MW's. The next morning however a health worker came in and put me at ease at once, she talked to me as tho i was the only important one on the ward (which is how i think you should be made to feel, not made to feel, like i should just give into the bottle to let them have a bed back) The health worker had been trained by Carol and within 5 mins kyla was latched on. The health worker came in for every feed while she was working to latch her on and then taught me how to do it.

I think its a good idea for a pregnant woman hoping to BF to go along to a BFing group if you have one in your area, as alot of people in our group dont mind letting you see how they position the baby etc. I knew nothing of BFing and felt totally alone when i gave birth so i think support is the key.

Sorry Morgan we kind of hijacked your post, i leaked alot for the first 6 weeks or so then not much.

Hun I added it for your benefits as its a good discussion

Thats sounds really interesting Lisa, however I don't know if you realise but the chances are its not a bfc course. with the NCT course they require that you have at least 6 to 9 months breastfeeding experience(depending on who you go with) before you can take up the course to help other people with breastfeeding, is very intense and takes quite some time to do NCT one is 3 but you can take up to 5 i think.

I think I know the one you mean as I had a look into similar shorter courses before I took up the one I'm on now, but they were only for peer supporter not for Breastfeeding Counselor and with all the experience that I had I felt I would much better help women if I did the comprehensive course, so I could really help others with all my ups and downs over the past year...and my failed attemps with the others in the past iykwim.

As you can tell I love talking about this stuff... its so interesting to me... so I was thinking - do you fancy starting up a different thread (rather than continuing to hijack this one ) and we can talk about course topics (both of ours) and if I can help you in any way I will.

Eta - just read ur post cez - didn't mean to leave you out

all we have been told is that we will be counsellors whether thats peer counsellors or breastfeeding counsellors i dont know and we will be trained to train others. do you have to pay for your course nikki?

I'm almost sure its a peer counsellor, have you thought about doing the bf counsellor one - i know its a lot more work and will take longer - but you'll be able to help so much more and go so much more indepth. You'll be able to counsel which as a peer supporter you cant really, and i think that would benefit so much more. You could check to see if there are any counsellors in your area and if there are, how many coz they can always do with more and to be able to professionally counsel people is such a great help.

Again any q's just ask or pm me

there are none.. this is why we are going through this course, so we can train and train others, other mums and other health care workers.. do you have to pay for this course out of interest nikki? how much is it.. the course im doing is obviously different to yours might be something i will look into after this 1

Actually there are - the one i'm on is over an hours drive from me towards you. Its in cross hands which is close to you - I can get you the details if you like. Its the nct that pays for it through the uni of bedfordshire. Out of curiosity how will you be able to train mum, others and heath care workers after only 5 weeks of training?

Eta - who's the course with coz i've got loads of info here that i can lend you or copy for you - i've got abm, nct and lll books and leaftets.

as i said before im not sure thats what we have been told. all i know is it includes LLL and others.
