Hi all, am new to the site and newly pregnant!!

I'm a very very lucky lady and got a 'BFP' after just the first month of trying! So I'm over the moon but also just feel totally out of my depth.

I am 26 and engaged to my other half.

I took a home pregnancy test yesterday morning which was positive, went straight to the GP and they confirmed it too. I couldn't believe it. I will be 5 weeks tomorrow and I have my first midwife appointment 12th Sept. Wondering what will happen at the midwife appointment? What does it entail? I feel as though it must be a mistake and I can't shake that feeling. I want it confirmed somehow so I can allow myself feelings for my little bean! Have others felt like this?

What are people's views on when to tell family/friends/work etc? And what are the main things I should be avoiding/doing? Apart from the obvious (alcohol etc).

I also get anxiety and high stress at times and am really worried this is going to affect my pregnancy. Any tips on this?

Looking forward to talking to some other mums-to-be!

Beth :)

Hey, Beth! Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months.

The first appointment is the "booking appointment". The midwife will do things like run through your medical history, ask how you're feeling and if you've experienced any problems so far, give you information on things you should and should not be eating throughout your pregnancy, etc. It's more of a get to know you and your partner kind of session and to give you some information on how to go about things.

Some people decide not to tell ANYONE that they are expecting until their 12 week scan. 12 weeks is when many people deem themselves to be at the "safe stage" and that is when they begin telling people. However everyone is different. I told my parents immediately and my partner and I told our friends a few weeks before the 12 week scan. It is entirely up to you how you go about things - it is your pregnancy after all.

Congratulations once again! :dust: X

Massive congrats beth. Is your EDD in april...if so come and join us on april mummies thread. I think they also talk to you about screening and some might discuss where you want to give birth too.

I think most of us feel like its not real. This is a little better after 12 wk scan. Some have early scan but think its now its 12 wks scan as standard for 1st scan.

Do you know when you EDD is? If May you may be the 1st yo announce a May baby! Congratulations again and happy and healthy 9 months x

Hey Congratulations thats such wonderful news, I remember feeling the way that you do right now when i was pregnant with my first, I`am now 11 weeks pregnant with my third :-)

When you see the midwife it will just be a little chat, Asking about family history, You might be asked to fill some forms in & then it`ll be a referal to the hospital for maternity services, Then the hospital will write to you to attend your local hospital where you will get a scan date for when your around 12 weeks, Thats when it all starts to get very exciting.

In regards to telling family & friends i never tell anybody until after my 12 week scan as i want to know that everything is ok before i share my news, Only me & my OH know right now & it is hard keeping it in lol

For work i would say it depends on what sort of job you do to how early you tell them as you may need a risk assesment done & action to be taken to ensure your safety at work, I work in catering & i told my employer after my 12 week scan as i needed a risk assesment.

Congratulations lovely!! It is terrifying but amazing also! 5 weeks - so you'll be due in April! Come join us in the April mummies thread!

First midwife appointment is bloods and family history from what I remember. As well as being given your pregnancy folder - for time this was the first time it felt real! I didn't with DS but I do with this one! I keep feeling like there's actually nothing there and I'm making it up - even though I've had an early scan which confirmed the pregnancy!

We have told our parents and we told work because of the cramps I was having which was the reason for the early scan. So kinda had to tell them especially as I've been told to take things easy from now on!

If you want to add me as a friend you're more than welcome to - I suffered with PPD and anxiety after I had DS but only went to get help with it a year ago (DS is now 2 and a half). I'm now able to deal with my anxiety a lot better. But I am finding that since falling pregnant again, I'm starting to fall back into old habits and panic about things that really don't matter!

Lovely to meet you Beth and can't wait to see you over in April mummies!

Xx

Thank you so much for all the info. It's nice to be able to talk freely about being PREGNANT!! Just want to shout it from the rooftops haha. I've told my mum and my partner's mum as well. I'm so close with my mum. She'd have known by looking at my face.

Thanks for the congrats. And same to you!! :) xx
