Hello everyone

I went to see my midwife last week and she asked me if I was planning on having a 4d scan. I am not as I can't afford it but asked why-

My midwife has said that 4 d scans are being suspended because of worries over placenta problems after the scans!

I don't know if anyone else has heard of this but it would worry me and I would want to find out all the info before going for one of these scans - especially as this info has come from my midwife!!!!!!

Lyndsey

I've looked for more info on this and can't find anything online.

Hmmmm

oh i say.
im sure its a load of crap. They've been doing those sorts of scans for years in private hospitals.

ill keep a look out.

yes I looked too and couldn't find anything but it did worry me as it came from my midwife ( I went on Monday) Maybe it is current research found in Maternity / nursing sites - I will have a look

they cannot be any more dangerous than normal scans. Also as they are a private thing they cannot be suspended. Ask your midwifewhere she heard it from lindsey.

I am not going back for a few weeks. - I should have said that the reason the midwife gave for them being "unsafe" was the amount of time spent "looking" at the baby and it was a reccomendation that they are suspended until more research has been done. I am going to try and find out more info on this

Didn't mean to scare anyone just though it would be a good thing to share.

When I was pregnant with Damien I had about 8 scans. They did mention that there hasn't really been much reasearch into repeated and lengthy scanning, and that they try to minimise it unless necessary. They also said that 4D scans are just as safe as a hospital 2D scan. Same equipment, just better quality.

If I had 8 and Damien is fine, although premature (had nothing to do with the placenta though) then I'm sure a 30-45 minute 4D scan won't hurt!

This is an article from the BBC website about scanning issues from 2D scans, but that's about all there is out there! Clicky

But then again the DOH reccomendations are that you only have scans to date and check for abnormalities they say that there has been no concrete evidence to show that scans are safe/unsafe.......... I have been reading some midwifery journals that are very interesting rgearding this subject..

I am going to sit on the fence until I know more info!!!

Interesting topic though.... :D

Don't stick your head in a midwifery book when pregnant unless you are a midwife, trust me! I was due to start my training just before we found out we were expecting Damien and got rid of the books I had as I didn't want to know too much that would just worry me.

Just a thought...

No not a midwife but am a nurse, just want to find out some info. I have access to a lot of nursing and midwifery journals online..... thought I would check them out.

So many people have had 4d scans I am sure its fine! If I was having one I would still go ahead unless they officially suspended them.

Oh that's cool. I still stayed well away, I'd just worry myself stupid!

Ive got a 4D scan booked and im going to ask my midwife regarding this topic when I see her on Thursday, see what her advice is. Il let you know what she says.

I guess the reason they can't say for sure whether the scans are dangerous or not is because it's unethical to test them out. I read once that repeated scanning isn't good, but I'm sure that a 4D scan couldn't cause that much harm :?

i agree kina. its just another silly scare to spoil pregnancy a bit more.

god if we avoided everything that was classed as dangerous we would all die of hunger and bordem!!!!

what will happen will happen i wish people would stop trying to control how life goes..!!! :x
'we shouldnt be on the pc for too long
dont drink when pg
dont smoke
dont watch tv too much
dont eat this that and everything cause it has something in it
bananas are the most fattening fruit there is, shock horror, what so we shouldnt eat them?
if you're pg dont go anywhere near dr whippy ice cream cause its not cold enough
you might catch this that or the other, yes and you might catch it when your not pg too from anything, its out of your control!!!!

Now 4d scans are unsafe...so that means that 2d scans are also unsafe because they are using the same equipment.

By the way, dont ever cross a road, it COULD kill you. Dont drive cars, they could kill, dont even move....cause something could kill you...

rant over lol

Your exactly right Cass!! Like Budgy says it just spoils the joys of pregnancy.

Loads of women must have had these 4D scans and not had any problems!
Consultants do 4D's in private hozzies when there are found abnormalities/problems etc and like you said if 4D was unsafe then so is 2D!!

Grrrrr know how you feel though about wanting to rant, hearing all the stuff you should/shouldt do does my head in sometimes!

ME TOO.........I REALLY want a fried egg sandwich or a boiled egg to dip my soldiers in Mmmmmmmmmmmm AND, Mr Whippy is the only ice-cream I would walk miles for

*drools*
