Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can advise me here...
My 3.5 week old has developed a rather annoying habit of waking up at 2am every morning, and not settling until 6! Before this he would sleep really well, wake up for a feed, change, cuddle, down. He still does this at other feed times but during these two he's unsettled. He will fall asleep on me but as soon as I put him down he's wriggling everywhere, grunting and groaning. I'm pretty sure he's suffering with colic and will look into some medicine for him but I just don't know what to do... I'm exhausted!! X

That's not good, mine does it all morning 7am till 1-2 pm and wont want to sleep then catches up a bit at teatime and is good in the night ( well wakes 2 hrly but feeds and sleeps no messing about)

Do you leave the nappy at 2 am if you really dont need to do it? To save waking more?

My baby had colic until he was about 14 weeks and would be screaming for hours in pain.

To help him we gave him infacol and did tummy massages. They were quite useful in getting the poo/wind through his system which seemed to be causing most of the discomfort.

Good luck!

How long do you cuddle him for before putting him down in bed? Always try and leave half an hour between finishing a feed and putting baby flat on their back in bed. It lets the milk go down and helps with any reflux or wind. I rest my baby against my chest after a feed, kind of like I'm winding him over my shoulder.

Thanks for the replies. If he doesn't need a nappy change I leave it, I'll only change him if it's going to cause him more discomfort. After a feed I wind him and settle him before he goes down, which is about 20-30 minutes. It's strange because he falls asleep fine at 2, and his eyes stay closed, he just grunts and groans and writhes about like he's uncomfortable. I've raised up the head end of his cot to see if that helped but no luck. Last night he woke at 1am and has been up and down ever since. I'm praying that sorting tummy issues out will help him settle x

My 4.5 week old is similar, but he does it from 4am until 7am ish. He has bad colic in the evenings and I think this is the wind working it's way out as he writhes about with his eyes shut, does one or several huge farts then goes quiet for a bit until the grunting/writhing starts again. We are looking into having him seen by a cranial osteopath as he was a forceps delivery and it can help relieve colic symptoms. Tried baths, massage, infacol etc!

Sounds like a common reaction to colic in your little one too

My LO was exactly the same at that age. GP said that it sounded like reflux and gave me gaviscon for him. He is now so much better. Settles great after a feed and doesn't seem to be in any pain x

Mrsolly was your LO sick? I was under the impression reflux was linked with vomiting? But I may be wrong... He's not often sick, but very windy. Am going to the pharmacy in a sec to see what they recommend x

No he wasn't sick. The occasional spit up but not vomiting up feeds xx

Oh I must be thinking of something else! I'm glad the habits on is helping. I got some dentinox and gripe water to try. If they don't help I'll see the GP. Poor little lad, hate seeing him suffer x

No your right with vomiting and reflux. I think most of the time babies do vomit with reflux. My little girl did but my son didn't. Hope what you have got works xx

Just replying to this how is Noah.? It's odd because a couple of weeks ago Harley was exactly the same , would wake between 1-4 and then be up again at 6..! it was a nightmare. But he seems to have settled now and only wakes at 1 now and how's back down. I sometines do his nappy then but it's a fast no talking change and straight down. So hang in there maybe in a couple of weeks he will have settled. The debtinox is really good for helping with wind, and also with the gripe water if Noah has a dummy you can put some on that for him. Hope you're ok! The tiredness is a killer!! X x

Controversial but have you tried letting him sleep on his side or stomach? This can help colic - my sister in law had to do it with my nephew after they turned into zombies with a baby with severe colic. It was the only way he would settle. They had an angelcare breathing monitor so felt slightly happier about doing this, although I know they are not infallible.
