My OH was given an Xbox by a friend that had the red rings of death. He did the wrap it in a towel method and it worked. It basically works by overheating it and forcing everything to cool down afterwards. It's not a permanent fix, though. Ours died again about a fortnight later and towelling it didn't help that time.
If you haven't had the Xbox long then Microsoft should fix it because it's a known issue with the first generation of Xboxes. If it's out of warranty they might charge you to fix it. We ended up selling it as they wanted £70 to fix and between that and postage costs it was cheaper to buy a new one.
my bro fixed his by wrapping it in a towel, turn it on and leave it until it gets 2 red lights then cuts out, then let it cool down for a good hour, it seems to melt then reconect some sort of connection, works a treat for him.
Microsoft will fix it for free if it has 3 red lights on for up to 3 years from purchase
I have just got mine back from them all working fine
All info is on here
The towel thing has been know to cause more probs if you have had it less than 3 years i would send it back to them when it goes again if it comes up with 3 red lights
If it goes again ring support on 02073659792. They'll send you the UPS labels and when you're ready to send it you just ring UPS to arrange collection. Mine was away for 2 weeks in October. But they normally give you a 1 month xbox live code for your troubles.
The towel method isn't really recommended though.

I had this a couple of weeks back! I sent mine off and Xbox sent me a brand new one!
It only took 8 days too and that was in the Christmas rush! Might just be worth sending it off hun!
Oh and I arrnaged it all online! (I hate phoning people lol)
If you do it online, just make sure you change the drop down when it asks whats wrong to "3 red lights" so that it changes the charges to free.
I got a refurbed one back, i was hoping i'd get one with a hdmi port, but i didn't.. lame lol
