Odd topic I know! But does anyone have any recommendations for spoons for LO feeding themselves? Lo seems to manage to turn the spoons around without even trying so not succeeding in scooping much up.

Thanks in advance

How old is LO?

I had Tommee Tippee plastic/rubbery spoons for DS for ages but it's really only this year he's managed to use them himself (turned two in Jan).

He also has the Tommee Tippee cutlery set (knife fork and spoon) with plastic handles and metal ends. He didn't get to grips with the metal spoon any quicker, but he's been using the fork himself for probably six months now.

Before that he had the angled fork and spoon (seen them in Boots) but tbh it wasn't the angle as such he struggled with, it was the handle length. Short stubby handles make a world of difference. Xx

Also, with spoons, try a metal one (I find the rubbery/plastic ones can be difficult to scoop with) with a stodgy porridge, or ice cream. Both these have an element of "stick", so once they get it on the spoon, if they turn the spoon over, it should still stick for a few seconds and allow them to get the food in their mouth.

DS now uses metal for his ice cream if we have it, and plastic/rubbery for his cereal (those are deeper so he gets some milk with his cereal, where as the metal is flatter, but better for "cutting" off bits of ice cream). Xx

He's 13mth & he's started tantruming this past week because he wants to do it himself. I also have a bit of an OCD when it comes to mess on a baby so really wanna encourage use of cutlery for proper meals opposed to hands lol!

I have a metal spoon with a chunky plastic handle so will try that thanks

My LO was using metal cutlery with plastic handles by that age.

I know it's good to get LO used to cutlery but do try not to worry about the mess too much. My LO is happy using cutlery but will still sometimes use his hands and make a mess. It is actually really good for them to experience the touch and textures etc, and less likely to result in a fussy eater later on.

I know! It's a massive failing on my part. Unusual too because I can be quite messy!!

I sympathise, my OH hates I let our son make so much mess when he eats. I can see him literally having to sit on his hands to stop him taking over feeding him sometimes! I do wonder why I make so much work for myself. But my OH is a fussy eater and I'm terrified of lo ending up the same. Right now I let him do what he needs as long as he's eating a variety of foods and every thing he's given.

Ha that sounds like me! I must go through umpteen wipes each meal
