I now realise my own mistake - I've been trying packing tape all these years (the brown stuff) and wondered why they've been escaping.

If you build in a release hatch in the nappy area, you can leave them there much longer - just change the nappy as required. Don't cover the mouth, they still make a noise when hungry.
