I know Lyla is too young yet but I was wondering at what age do they start bothering with rattles/toys etc?

I suppose it will be very different for each child.

Most new borns will like looking at high contrasting toys/pictures. I know April used to stare intently at her black and white book from very very early on.

Around 6/7 weeks they will start to follow high contrast toys/mobiles with their eyes.

Most babies start to hit out at things around 8 weeks or so. We started putting April on he baby gym then and she began flailing her arms around and hitting things - by 10 weeks she could intentionally reach for something almost accurately and put it in her mouth. (Best to have small toys with easy to grag loops or rings)

From about this time onwards they begin to get more and more interested in reaching and grabbing and investigating toys and rattles....(and anything else within their grasp!!!)

thanks happybunny, trying to find things to entertain her throught the day so she sleeps at night (wishful thinking i know  )

At such a young age she will love just seeing your face smiling at her :)

As happybunny said, high contrast pictures are always good. TBH she is too small atm to really be doing much. Her eye focus isn't great either and she can only see a short ways in front of her.

I'd be more inclined to talk and sing to her, give lots of cuddles and let her see your face as much as possible. In a few weeks she'll start to show interest in other things as her eyesight improves and adjusts.

My Lo is just over 3 months and has started showing an interest in things that she can pick up easy or hit (play gym, loops linked together). Not rattles yet tho as they are too heavy for her. We have a black and white book too and she's loved that from been a few weeks old...it has faces and patterns in it, she's always loved her mobile too.

gosh u kno what i cant remember

i think it was 2 or 3 or 4 months (sorry for the broad spectrum!)

its black and white on the back

ps they grab things about 8 weeks and about 12 weeks they 'discover' their hands so will hold rattles about then

Connie was waving rattles around at 2 months but she is, as the health visitor puts it "freakily advanced". She was loving her playmat at about 4 weeks and batting SheCow on it shortly after that.

TBH, Luke's not been overly interested in "playing" with toys until quite recently... the past month or 2.
