I always thought you couldnt eat any nuts during pregnancy but when i looked it up last night i found some websites saying no nuts at all and some saying to just avoid peanuts but walnuts, cashew nuts and stuff are ok?

What should you really avoid and is any one eating them anyway? i read that theres no scientific evidence to say that they harm the baby anyway? :wall:

The nut thing has always confused me as well i did avoid all nuts with my 1st pregnancy but this one i have this thing for Feast Lollies which has nuts on it so im not sure

I was told that if someone in your immediate family has a nut allergy then you should avoid them incase the baby has a nut allergy. If not then you're ok.

I love eating peanuts and have been avoiding them but noone in our families has a nut allergy so do you think it'll be ok to eat them?

If you go by what I was told, then yes. But this is what my brothers fiancee's midwife told her.

I don't know, its all confusing :shakehead:

yeah the whole nut thing confuses me too, i read it is mainly down to allergies, in my book it says if you have history of nut allergies or asthma in your family to avoid nuts, as your baby could have a nut allergy. i am not a nut person myself but there is nuts in some of the things i eat. sorry this isn't really much of a help, i have a motto at the minute which goes like this... "if in doubt, do without", but i am just terrified of something going wrong so am avoiding everything, lol.

alot of what we read is so confusing, i had this with tuna, some say yes, 4 medium cans a week or 2 fresh tuna steaks, so i am still eating my tuna, in my book it says tuna in moderation is good as we need the omega 3.

I read that if either you or your partner have ANY allergies, avoid peanuts, but other nuts are OK. My OH has hay fever, so I'm avoiding them - I don't like them that much anyway!

As for tuna, it's not bad for us at all, but it contains high levels of mercury because of the pollution levels in the seas they are fished from. That's why you can't have shark or marlin either.

yeah i read that too, thats why we can only have so much, i would never eat more than what i am allowed anyway, and never ever eaten shark or marlin.

it can all just get very confusing. the whole seafood thing was confusing me alot, and i cheated and ate 1 mussel  , that was ages ago though.

I know - I read last week that you should avoid fresh basil too, as it can deplete the uterine lining, but it's fine when cooked or dried. I threw our basil plant away after that! I think it's all too easy to get paranoid when you're pg, and as my mum keeps telling me, there was none of this 'don't eat this or that' when she was pg with me and my brother, and we're both fit and healthy! I won't eat anything I don't feel happy about though, and I reckon I can live without shark and chips for the next few months!

yeah my mum said when she was having me she had a pork pie, in was in date and looked ok, but it gave her food poisoning, and she went on the big dipper ride when she was five months pregnant with me, and i am totally fine, i think

When i asked my doctor whats the dos and don'ts of eating are he mentioned tuna in moderation, stear clear of shark & Marlin because of mercury content, avoid liver and undercooked eggs, meat or seafood. No mention of nuts but I love them so they will be staying in my diet.
He said I could eat whatever I wanted and not to get too worried about it (after all I'd already had pate, alcohol, antibiotics, cold & flu remedies etc for 7 weeks before finding out I was pregnant)

I am allergic to cows milk and was worried that by denying the baby cows milk I'd actually pass my allergy on. I had a miserable time as a child not being able to have milk (taking goats milk to school etc with me) so I've added a small quantity of cows millk back into my diet just in case.

I saw my GP this morning and she told me to avoid peanuts as I have allergies already so that's what i'm going to do....which is a b*gger cos I love munching on peanuts!!
She also said that hard cheeses were ok and pastuerised yoghurts. I don't drink milk either Frog as i'm intolerant to it but she said as my bone density is ok I don't need to add calcium to my diet. It's weird, I can eat cheese and cream but not milk...v strange!

I can eat other cow milk made things like cheese but milk & cream don't agree with me. I don't get physically sick but I got a runny nose - almost like hayfever type symptoms.
I was allergic to cows milk as a child and then grew out of it and then a couple of years ago had strange cold like symptoms - ended up keeping a food diary for weeks and it turned out to be caused by milk and red wine (weird combination). same symptoms for both.

Oh well done you! Good spot!

Yum yum - Dry roasted peanuts here I come! :cheer: :cheer:
