hi,

i am 4/5ths engaged - is that further along than 1/5th? had midwife appointment and she told me one thing, and then another midwife told me another...!!!

My GP and midwife have different ways of writing my notes- for example my GP put 5/5 and my MW put 0/5 (the baby wasn't engaged at this point?). So I'm as confused as you on this?!?!?!?!

I've a midwife appointment later on today so I'm going to ask all about this.

I explained this on another thread - I agree it's a pain!

It's either written as fifths engaged or fifths palpable. Palpable means what they can feel. So 1/5 engaged means that 1/5 of the baby's head is in your pelvis, so on up until 5/5 (fully) engaged when the midwife or doc can't feel the baby's head any more. 4/5 palpable means that they can feel 4/5 of the baby's head, meaning 1/5 is engaged. So...

4/5 engaged is further along than 1/5 engaged

Alex - your GP is using "fifths palpable" and your MW "fifths engaged".

Hope that makes sense!

Ahhh, now it makes sense. Thanks :)

I keep getting confused by this as well. My MW at the doctors told me 2 weeks ago that I was 3/5 engaged but the next day the MW at the hospital said that from the way Aimee is lying there is no way she was engaged. It is a pickle!

Hi Freepie,

I'm 4/5ths engaged too and it feels like the baby is just about to drop out!!!! It happened a lot earlier this time around and boy am I appreciating the difference!!!!
