We just had the worst night ever - Maddie for some reason got a really bad temperature - she woke at 2am with a weak cry. She felt warm so we gave her Calpol and then some milk but she didn't settle and I went back after 5 minutes and she was physically shaking and wouldn't stand in her cot. I lifted her out and she snuggled in really close and was shaking quite hard and I could feel she had got a lot hotter - took her temp - 39.5c.
So I just stayed cuddling her until the Calpol kicked in, but half an hour later her temp was 40.4c . At that point I thought we should take her to hospital but DH suggested we phoned NHS direct. Glad we did - they said straight away to strip her down to nappy give her some cool water to drink and wipe her face/hands with a damp cloth. Because she was shaking so much I thought she was cold so I'd kept her in a sleeping bag, cuddling her, which just made her temp continue to rise .
Thankfully about 15 minutes later while I was still on the phone to NHS Direct her temp started to drop, and this morning she seemed fine though she has a cold. But it was very scary indeed - I was terrified she was going into convulsions.
Anyway - learned 2 useful things. Firstly when she has a temp, stripping off to help cool down more quickly is important. Secondly NHS are bloody fantastic - she went through so many things with me on the phone and it meant we didn't put Maddie through the trauma of a hospital.
Sorry for the long post but thought I'd share this with you in case it helps anyone in the future
