I've just found out I'm expecting baby number 2. Baby number 1 is nearly 14 months old so it's a nice gap. I'm coming round to the idea shall I say?!

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about my previous birth. I got a diamorphine injection that in retrospect I would have done without. It made my baby so groggy for about two days after he was born and I think it may have dulled my urge to push. I didn't experience any uncontrollable urge to push at all. I pushed because they told me to rather than because I felt the need to. Does diamorphine dull that need to push? I had gas and air as well but that was eventually taken off me and even then I didn't really feel the urge. I had a forceps delivery as well.

I'm really concerned about this with my next one. I want to avoid a c-section if at all possible and I'm starting to wonder if maybe it was just me not feeling it or if it was the drug combination. I feel like a complete beginner going into this one, even though it's still eight months or so away. Very confused.

I had diamorphine in my first labour, and it halted my contractions. I ended up having to have a C-section as they couldn't get them going again! I wouldn't get it again if I had the choice.

I didn't have any drugs and I had no urge to push, so it might not have been the drugs.

i had diamorphine and then 20 mins later said i needed to push - mw should have examined me before i got it as i progressed very quick. 3cm to 10cm in 3 hours. I was so tired and falling asleep while pushing but it didn't numb the feeling, i had that awful pressure and it was like a pain relief. Speak to your mw at your booking in to see if its common, maybe baby wasn't in the 100% correct position when you were 10cm so you didn't get the full pressure.
Olly was back to back to i dont know if that was why it was different

xx

I had diamorphine in both my labours. I didn't get the urge with my son and ended up with an episiotomy and ventouse delivery. With my daughter I very much felt the urge to the point I kept trying to close my legs to stop her coming out haha! X
