Ok so I think I may just be over thinking here (again), but would like your opinions on this anyway.
I have always assumed and been told that ultrasounds are completely safe with no known risks etc. We had a reassurance scan at 8 weeks as we lost our first pregnancy. We then had the routine 12 week dating scan, after that my rather excited hubby booked a gender scan at 16 weeks. Then came the all important 20week scan. So all in all our little guy has already had 4 scans. Hubby came home today having booked a surprise 4d bonding scan for 29 weeks which I was rather excited about.
However, after looking on the website there is a link to an article that claims ultrasounds have not actually had a great deal of testing where fetal safety is concerned and that there has in fact been evidence that they can disturb the fetal brain development, potentially causing long term neurological issues and that they should only be used as necessary for clinical purposes.

Of course I now feel absolutely terrible, nobody has ever bothered to mention anything like this to me before, otherwise we would have stuck to the 2 hospital scans! I also now feel extremely reluctant to potentially put our little one at risk for a 5th time just for our own benefit and keepsakes, but if not my hubby has just wasted £100, so I will feel guilty either way but obviously our baby is the most important factor.

Has anybody heard of anything like this before? Or does anybody have any knowledge on the subject? Maybe I'm just acting silly and over thinking like usual but, if there are risks I would rather not go to this 4d scan.
Thanks in advance ladies

I have heard this before but the way I have seen it is a hospital wouldn't do it if there was serious harm surely. I had a scan at 6 weeks 8 weeks 12 weeks 14 weeks and 20 weeks and am due to have growth scans every 3 weeks or so in the new year. It's the only way to know if all is ok in there. Enjoy your 4d scan enoigh people have then and there never any disclaimer about risks x

I hope not as I’ve had scans at 5 weeks, 7 weeks, 10 weeks, 13 weeks, 15 weeks, 20 weeks, 28 weeks and 32 weeks (and will have one at 36 weeks)!

This was from 2011 “so far human studies have not shown a direct causal relationship between diagnostic ultrasound exposure during pregnancy and adverse effects to the developing baby.”.

And useful article here -

So basically I think you’d have to be getting a long ultrasound very frequently for it to factor in.

i also read that its longer ultrasounds that are a potentially problem like 30 mins plus. I think you're ok with a few additional ones it would be just if you had repeated really long ones. In both my previous pregnancies i had reassurance scan, gender scan, and a later 4d scan on top of the NHS ones. but none were as long as 30 mins.

In addition to the above you will find that the private scanners use the lowest amount of ultrasound necessary to view your baby xx

I tried to look up more info on this too and literally all I could find was the baby doesn't really like them because it feels hot, which would seem that they are more dangerous in the beginning like having a bath is. But really, my sis had growth scans with her 3rd baby every week past 20 weeks. She was finally induced at 38 weeks (they were worried baby was underweight the whole time - he was born 7lbs 1/2oz). He is perfectly healthy and has had no side effects whatsoever from having so many scans
