My toddler's (just turned 3) has had a cold and now how quite a nasty cough which kept her up most of the night last night.

We give her calpol for other symptoms, put Vicks on her back, chest & feet, and gave her some warm milk before bed. Is there anything else we could try? Hoping for a better nights sleep for her tonight. X

Put a pillow under the top of her mattress to raise her head up more. When my lo has a cold we put Olbas oil in a large bowl of hot water, it helps with blocked noses but not sure about coughs. Cough medicine at that age doesn't tend to be great but worth a try if you haven't already x

Everything brown eyed girl said. Generally steam is good so the bowl on radiator is always good or I bought a humidifier (best for more dry coughs I think). Also milk (dairy) can increase mucus production so may not be the best for those symptoms but if it's a comfort thing too it's probs best to stick to it. We also have the vapour plug in which sometimes helps (FYI not safe to breathe in if pg). Good luck for tonight x

I was told cough medicine is a big no no for this age? As it can be harmful to them?

We used to do the olbas oil when she was in her cot but now she's in a bed I have nowhere safe to leave the bowl of hot water.

We've tried a steamy bath & a yoghurt after supper (I dunno  ) and letting her take juice to bed which we usually don't. OH is reading her bedtime story now and her cough has started already. :(

I read on NHS earlier it's a myth about milk increasing mucus production. :)

Thanks will try and get one of those vapour plug things I think as when my daughter was first born she had a stuffy nose for the first 2 month of her life. I'm guessing they're suitable for newborns? X

I use the calpol vapour plug in, and raise her mattress slightly. I am not sure there's a huge amount else you can do apart from pray it's over shortly!

It says it's suitable from 3 months.

I could've written this post about my 2 1/2 year old! His is very dry and constant, once he starts he really struggles to stop. I've raised his bed and mattress and he has his window open slightly. Other than that we just have to wait it out :(

No annoyingly, 3m+

Thanks re the milk thing, seems like it's a total myth!

Cough medicines can be given 1yr+ but there's little evidence they help x
