A friend of a friend has her baby 2 weeks before Riley, so he's just over 3 months old. He was born at 34 weeks, poor wee thing. My friend was telling me the other day that he was crying in the evenings so he's now on hungry baby milk, and she's giving him spoonfulls of baby food cos it "seems to calm him down" :|

I thought babies should only really get food after 4months at the earliest, but she's been giving him rusks for weeks too :? He's nowhere near 4 months, and even further off 4months if you go by corrected age. I'm not going to say anything as I don't really know her, but I just thought it was a bit strange........am I the only one? :?

Do you know if she was told to by her HV?

Maybe she mistook the crying for something else - colic. I would have thought at before 4 months upping the volume of milk would be the 1st option

I'm not sure really. I started weaning Finlay at about 4 and a half months but I wouldn't have before 4 months but thats personal choice.

If she is doing so on the advice of HV or Doc then ok I guess, if baby is being kept an eye on but if its of her own doing I don't know what to think.

To me it sounds more like colic if crying in the evening. Also surely age wise he is too young to wean. It can't be good for his kidneys and his gut certainly can't have matured enough. Or has been said increasing the milk volume would be good rather than hungry baby maybe. But baby food? :|

I don't know. I'd be shocked if I knew anyone doing that of their own choosing without seeking medical advice first. She could be causing more harm than good.

It'd worry the crap out of me if anyone I know was doing this. I'd probably have to ask them if they were doing such a thing because they were advised to. At least so I could know one way or the other. If not then I'd nicely explain that it wasn't the greatest idea ever to give food so early.
