So p*****d off! It started when I tried cutting down 1 feed the other day. The annoying thing is I phoned a breast feeding helpline and a breastfeeding specialist and I don't think they advised me properly. It hurts alot, especially when he feeds!! :(

Really hate taking anti biotics so hoping I won't have to...

xxx

I had this as not long after Toby was born. His tongue tie stopped him from feeding properly. It's sooo painful. I got told to use ibuprofen as it acts as an anti immflamitry. Cold compress and rest helps too. I ended up on anti biotics but that was what my doc decided was best. Hope it gets better soon. Also I 've got an app on my iPhone, it's called breastfeeding experience and has very easy to read little e books and one of them talks about gradually dropping feeds. It's in the breastfeeding for beginners e book. Also there's one for managing mastitis. Xx

Thanks hon. Didn't know you could take ibuprofen while bf-ing but sounds like a good idea. Going to try and get a docs appointment tomorrow too. Don't have an iphone tho for the apps - maybe I can get it online? Will have a look... xx

Yeah you can take ibuprofen but they prefer you to take paracetamol according to a book I have (it nay be Nhs not sure as I'm expressing and can't move). I think they say to cut down on the amount of time you let bubs feed for/express for every couple days and just monitor it that way you know if anything is starting to develop rather than cutting out a feed altigether.

I haven't had mastitis (touch wood) but I can imagine it must be horrible, hugs hun xx

thanks for this :) when you say cut down on time feeding, does this mean top up with formula? xx

Yeah I would guess so - if he usually does 40m for example take it to 35m and offer a top up I suppose, will probs take forever but its safer xx

:hugs: I've fed through this twice now, it's awful. I really hope you feel better soon, it's the worst! x

I've had it twice, both times I've had a massively high temperature and felt like I've got flu, along with the sore boobs. When I went to the doctor he gave me antibiotics which I really didn't want (I had six lots in the first few months after Alex was born :( ), and said 'hmmm yes, your breast does look engorged' - I managed to keep my mouth shut but was slightly offended as they didn't actually look any different to normal

Anyway, I was told the best thing to do is keep on feeding as much as possible as babies are the best help in unblocking the milk ducts if that is the problem. I was also told to massage my boob from the outside down towards the nipple, and to put warm flannels on them.

Hope it goes soon, it is truly horrible :(

Thanks again ladies. Thankfully I seem to have a fairly mild version of mastitis and spoke to HV yesterday who seesm to think it will clear up on its own touch wood. She also told me to do boob massage but it seemed to make it hurt more? Fx it does go soon... xxx

Had it once a few weeks after birth and I got the shivers, sickness and tears :)

It's the worst pain and I fed through it, I like to push it to the back of my mind.

But...even now I have a day where I don't feed him as he is at his bananas and he is on formula and I express (but not as often as he feeds) and haven't had it back...yet. My milk production is slowing down too, having issues atm.

lol bananas! :D Sorry you're having issues atm - I get stressed when my milk doesn't seem to be enough for Harry.... Have you trying fenugreek extract? Some women say it helps their milk production xx
