I just wondered what age you started swimming with your babies? OH is keen to do this with LO, just wondered what you though was a safe time to start and how long do you suggest LO is in the water? Any advice on nappies/swimmers for the job too would be greatly appreciated, thankyou in advance

my health visitor advised waiting for 6 week injections but you can go before.

A local centre here has parent/baby sessions which I can't wait to start!

Thankyou kirlykird
I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time when you start swimming with your little Samuel too :cheer:

There is no evidence to say they can't start right away and they do not need to have had their immunisations first. Were taking our LO to Little Dippers in September, he'll be 4 weeks old and won't be the youngest that has ever taken the classes. As for swim pants try Huggies little Swimmers and for ultra protection use Splash About swim pants (sometimes called a happy nappy) on top - they are washable covers almost but a lot of private swimming clubs will insist on something like that to prevent accidents and a wasted session having to drain/clean the pool.

There is further information on the NHS website or with other swim schools (say Aqua Babies) that give further information on newborn swimming lessons and state it's perfectly safe to start swimming before the injections are completed etc. Do some research in your area and remember to suss out classes that might be held in your local hospital pool, often hydrotherapy pools and similar that the 'public' can't use are used for specific baby classes due to the warmer regulated temperatures.

I've been looking into baby swimming for weeks now so feel free to ask me any other questions you have about it.

I started taking Jacob when he was 3 months. We now go to water babies every Friday morning which he loves! I put him in a swim nappy from Boots and then some trunks from Mothercare.

They do little dippers by me too! lol We downloaded the online tutorials to do by oursleves for now! Its great fun and we have practiced in the bath from when Logan was about 4 weeks old!

I wanted to get Maddie in the water as soon as I could so I just waited until she was big enough to fit in the swimming nappies - she was a few weeks old and I think she had had her first injections by then too.

I only had her in for about 20 minutes to start with as even in the learner pool which is supposedly warmer, she got a bit cold.

I wish I'd done the swimming lessons - I think it's amazing to see the tiny babies floating properly on their backs and swimming underwater :D

Thanks so much for all the information, and your stories everyone
It seems swimming is both popular and lots of fun, makes sense babies like water having been submerged in the womb so long hehe
Thanks again :D
