Just a few questions regarding sterilising.

I've just started weaning Jack and he's now having a little bit of baby rice every day in a bowl. Should I be sterilising his bowl and spoon and if so how? So far I've just been washing them in washing up liquid and putting them away then soaking them for a few minutes in boiling water before using them.

Also, we're going on holiday in a few weeks and just wondering how I'm going to sterilise his bottles then. We use a microwave steriliser and there's no microwave in our room. I don't even know how long i'm supposed to be sterilising for really?

Anyone got any advice? Thanks xxx

All I ever do is sterilize in boiling water :)

You can buy sterilising tablets or liquid to be used in cold water- Milton is a well known brand to look out for x

In terms of sterilising feeding bowls you are doing more than me! I just wash in hot soapy water or the dishwasher, then leave to air dry and use! Feel bad now like I should be sterilising them (although my child is a thumb sucker, and God knows where she puts that before she sticks it in her mouth!!). As for going away, we are off to France on Sun and I am taking some Milton with me to cold sterilise stuff.

Ahh Jack is a thumb sucker too and he's rolling over and putting hands all over the carpet and whatnot so god knows why I bother sterilising bowls! It's the same with his toys, he puts things in his mouth but it's impossible to sterilise it all! I'm just trying to keep things as clean as poss but i don't wana get too hung up on it. Babies have been surviving for hundreds of years with no sterilisation x

Bee that's my thoughts exactly- I really think you can go overboard with things!!

I think it's just common sense.... Like you say we've survived a good few hundred years!

I never sterilised bowls and spoons and now he's over 6 months I don't sterilise cups or bottles not that he has bottles really.

I've never sterilised spoons and bowls and this was reinforced by the nursery nurse who visited us for our weaning talk also telling me not to bother.

I still do bottles though and I think I probably always will do until she stops having them. The bacteria which grows in the milk scares me lol.
