Spoon feeding and duvets

Ds is loving having his own spoon to feed himself but I'm a bit confused as to what spoon would be best for him. We have long thin plastic ones which he struggles with and a metal one with a chunky rubber handle which I think he's able to grip better but getting food on both is tricky and he's finding it difficult to get the spoon in his mouth. Any tips on what spoons are better to start off with?

We're at the point where he's moved out of his grobag and needs a duvet. The weather has been so stuffy and warm lately so we've been using blankets and cellulars but want to have a duvet ready for when the weather cools. He's still in a cot, ideally we'd like to keep the cost as low as possible. Any recommendations?

Thanks ladies!

Hi Kumber,
I found that my DD was also struggling with the spoons at first but I strongly believe that if you bought 100 different types of spoons it would be the same with all. It just takes practice and a lot of bib cleaning. Don't worry your DS will get it in a few weeks.

Regarding duvets, I just bought the set for my DD and I am planning to give it to her in the autumn when she will be 2.5 and she will be in her cot still in the lowest setting. She hardly stays in one place in her bed so I'm not worried that having a duvet will cause a problem. I am also currently using blankets only as it is so hot in the house.

We went straight to a fork for solids at around the 10 month mark, she was a fussy eater until the fork weirdly so I guess she wanted some control?! Worth a try maybe depending on age but at least once the food is stabbed on it won't fall off!!

See I've heard some great things about going straight in with a fork cus spoons requie more dexterity, but when I asked family members I was told not to be so silly, he would end up stabbing himself in the eye?!

Our 16 month old eats with spoons and forks, depending on the meal. She has never poked herself in the eye!

Her room is very warm so she just sleeps in her PJs at the moment and has a blanket for when it gets colder.

DS was strictly on a fork until he was about two, then I started giving him his own spoon for "stickier" foods like a thick porridge or mash, which he could get on the spoon then aim for his mouth, and if he tipped the spoon on the way the food wouldn't instantly all slither off.

Realistically I think the actual kind of spoon is just trial and error xx

Thanks ladies, I think I'm gonna try him with a fork. It just makes so much more sense too, most of the food we eat at home barring a few Asian dishes are all with a fork so surely he needs to learn to maneuver that before a spoon!

We have a fork and spoon set and offer both at meal times - he picks himself and has spoon fed himself most his meals for months now - sometimes he likes to use his hands mind

Type of spoon makes no difference but you don't eat yoghurts with forks for example so buy a set so he gets used to all Cutlery :)

Yeah we have a set, he just can't seem to get it at the right angle. Everything is sideways

We had finger foods today to give the spoon feeding a bit of a break but I'll try him with a fork tomorrow and see how he does.

Boots have spoons and forks which are on an angle. Jaspy feeds himself sideways too but the angled cutlery is proper helping him!

Aaaahhh Boots sells them! That's the one place I didn't look! Are they worth the investment do you think and when do they switch to a straight utensil?

there is a great chunky little spoon and fork set in tesco that I found Ettaley can hold easily and as the handle is short it's easier for her to get it to her mouth etc.

All these different types, it's a minefield!

He's about to have lunch so we'll give his fork a go. Wish us luck!

I think so! Jasper has been eating a lot better with them! I guess when they have mastered it properly they can go on to having normal cutlery? Not too sure though

He did really well with the fork today so I think with it. He looked so proud of himself, bless him! Thanks girls :)

We got a duvet today, a 4 tog one as it's the only one Asda had. Unsure whether it's too warm for it yet though, your thoughts?

What temp is his room? I sleep naked under a 10tog atm as I get hot - usually pull it on and off so could be alittle warm just now but if his room is cool enough and has light bedwear on it could be ok? Maybe try it and see what happens

I have no idea what temp it is tbh! We don't use a monitor, just his skin temp. His room is the coolest in the flat so we put him under it thinking he could just kick it off if he's too warm but nope, he's snuggled himself right down and his temp is spot on! He looks so adorable!
