What do you ladies think about babies sleeping on their tummys?

James is ALWAYS put to bed on his back and ALWAYS ends up srcreaming because he has done 3 laps round the cot on his back and then gets his head stuck up against the bars and can go no further!!!

This morning he woke up like this so I got him out the cot and put him on his tummy on our bed so he could watch tv while we got up and dressed. He promptly fell asleep again! Took him downstairs and put him in the travel cot on his tummy and he fell asleep again. He woke up very happy and not at all grouchy like he sometimes does. Was fed and had a cuddle with his big sister (feel asleep) until it was time for lunch and then was put in travel cot on tummy and is now sleeping "like a baby!"

He has been a grumpy so and so for a few days and this has been the most contented I've seen him!

I know it is advised because of sids that they should be on their backs but just how much does it increase the risk do you think?

I have checked him regularly while he's been sleeping but was just thinking about night-times.

wee man is the same, he just wont sleep on his back, gotta be tummy or side :| .

as far as the risk goes, we check on him regularly, and he's fine so far :) . not much ya can do to stop them getting their own way, Riley's so strong now he just rolls about till he's comfy :D

Evie has slept on her tummy since she was able to roll over. I gave up trying to put her onto her back. I have an Angelcare monitor which lessens the worry for me.

She has always slept better like that really

edit* - sorry must add Evie was probably around 5 months when she could roll herself onto her tummy. prior to that she was always on her back...and perhaps occasionall slightly on one side

With DD we found that she always slept better and for longer on her tummy. I can't remember how old she was when we first tried it but I would guess at about 2/3 months and after that our lives we're much improved because she would get more sleep, therefore we would too and she was less grumpy! This time with DS I wanted to try and see if he would sleep ok on his back but after he was 2 weeks old we realised he was just the same as his sister so have been putting him to sleep on his tummy.

I do worry about SIDS but my instinct is that he's happier on his tummy. I did mention it to my HV (who is actually really nice) and she said that while it isn't recommended that as a parent it's up to you to make an informed decision.

Finlay has slept on his tummy from day one - it was either that or on his tummy or my chest which was a pain in the bum.

He will sleep on his side but only if propped up otherwise he doesn't stay there.

FSID say the number of cot death have fallen by 70% since changing advice to put children on their backs.

I'm not sure how much of that 70% is just to do with sleeping on their backs as the advice to place babies on thier backs was given alongside advice to not smoke near your baby and over heat with too many layers.

Babies with dummies also are less likely to suffer SIDs

I also recommend a sensor monitor if you choose to put a baby on their front. They detect the baby is breathing and provide a better peace of mind.

Best of luck with your decision making, it is scary.
