Is it definitrely ok for a baby to go asleep on their side? Leorah sleeps so much better this way as she always gets wind on her back and cries out a lot in her sleep. She is sleeping in a moses basket in the bed with me and has a breathing sesor alarm too. I just can't stop being paranoid about cot death because sometimes I can't hear her breathing.

Thanks :)

The best position is the back but the side is the next best. The reason they don't recommend side is due to the fact that you have to watch that they can't roll over onto their front if they are not rolling yet. There are special pillows you can buy or just roll up a towel and put it by her side to stop her falling forward :D

Thanks, I had rolled up some blankets to stop her falling forward but then got paranoid she'd fall into it and wouldn't be able to breath! She can move her head really wel though so this shouldn't happen should it?

Hi Skatty

I had exactly the same concerns when Olivia was a newborn. She settled so much better on her side and slept for longer spells. I asked my Mum how she put her 8 kids to sleep and she said all except one (my brother preferred to sleep on his tummy) settled better on their sides. This gave me some confidence so I then went ahead and propped Olivia up with a blanket behind her. She never seemed to be at a total 90 degree angle though so I didn't think it would be easy for her to roll onto her tum and like your wee girl she had a good head control even from a young age.

Do what you think is right.

Thanks, I just can't believe how much comfier she is on her side and I do have the breathing moniter, I will see how it goes tonight :D

can i just check i have this right? babes is in the moses basket and then the basket is on the bed with you?

just wanted to warn you if that is the case then your mattress sensor may well be picking up your movement/breathing. i have put ours on to test it before without alex in the cot and even me moving a tiny bit on the floorbaords was enugh of a vibration for it to pick up as movement. might be owrth checking if you put it there without babes in for a bit while you lie there are toss & turn for a bit then try beign still and see if it picks up breathing?

sorry if i read it all wrong - i just know how sensative ours can be :)

as for being on side i think its fine personally - alex was a tummy baby and still wont sleep on his back - but you need to comfy with whatever you do or you wont get nay sleep for worry!

Em you are right the sensor picks up my movements too! I have put the moses basket in her cot now but have decided to let her sleep with me for now as she is very distressed in the night with wind :)

i know i used to let alex come in with me after a feed if he was windy and not settleing - you know its not advised but sometimes its either go insane or you break the rules!

We did the same thing, when she really couldn't settle after the 3am-ish feed we used to bring Ellie into our bed until she was deep asleep and then put her back in the cot. I was worried about doing it and we tried not to make a habit of it, but she dropped that feed at just under 8 weeks old so hopefully we haven't done any harm.

I wouldnt worry Nicky - alex goes to bed awake at 7.30 and falls asleep by himself and rarely a peep out of him tim 6.45am! so it didnt hurt him to snuggle in with us once in a while!
