I´ve recently moved to this country from the Netherlands.
I had two difficult breastfeeding experiences. Very long story short; with the first I pumped fulltime for 8,5 months untill I had no more than a few drops. Very bad pumping policy resulted in way too little milk (after having waaay more than my son could drink from a bottle). I resulted to taking something called 'domperidon'. It's a drug meant for setteling an upset stomach - it's got nothing to do with breastmilk whatsoever but just happens to aid in bringing up prolactin levels. My sister had a premie at 26 weeks and was adviced by her hospital to take it to increase her breastmilk supply - which it did. It worked wonderfully for me in increasing by about 10 to 20% (even with continuing bad pumping policy from my part).
With my second I had varying times in which I needed to pump and/or try everything in my power to get breast milk supply up including as much as 20 feeds a day. I had to start taking syntocinon and also started taking domperidon again when two consequtive weeks of 20-feeds-a-day-plus-pumping-policy did nothing for me. This time both prescribed by a lactation expert by Medela.
I know now very well why both my experiences went horribly wrong so I don't need any advice on that (yet!).
I'm very worried though that at some point I will need either of them drugs again. Domperidon used to be an over the counter sold drug, but got placed under prescription drugs after some Belgian study last year showed possible links to heart disease with extended use of the drug.
I asked my midwife here whether I could get either. Domperidon I didn't expect to be able to get, but she told me that even syntocinon I couldn't get on prescription! Is this true?! Perhaps these drugs are called different here. I couldn't give you a name or explaination for domperidon, but syntocinon i got in the form of a nosespray. It's basically oxytocin and induces a let down within seconds to minutes without the need for suckling(depending on how well I use it/how much milk supply I've got/nose colds etc).
Thnx in advance for any answers.
