Hi

Well ive been attempting to pump this week cuz june is almost here and i didnt even get 1 oz on my left breast after not feeding off of it for almost 6 hours ? and Kiara had to eat of the other so that was out of the question.
Does this mean im not producing enough milk?
Also Kiara is usually cranky after feedings now even though shes is the one that just stops eating does this mean maybe she isnt getting enough or should i put that off as teething?
Any suggestions welcome please :D
thanks.

Sounds like she is teething - Ella has been the same (she's got her first toothie).
I know it's annoying but she is better at getting milk out of your boob than a pump, I struggle sometimes too. Is it an electric or hand pump?

yes i struggle with a pump too sometimes, and then other times i can get loads... weird.... i have the avent electric one, and i do get more with it than i did with the manual avent one.

I haven't expressed for ages but at the moment I do feel like I have very little milk in the day. I need to drink more and let him suckle more too.

I would have a hot shower before expressing, and have a big drink an hour or so before hand too.

Hi

Thanks girls its an electric pump by teh way a first years one.
Guess i just have to live with it its just shes been eating every 2 hours day and night and seems like shes not getting enough after she eats she cries?
I iwll ask the health nurses today as well as i will be seeing a few today at mom and baby group.

Could it be a growth spurt? Ella just went through her 4 month one, last a couple weeks.

Hi

maybhe never thought they had one at 4 months my health nurse thinks it might be low milk production since i was taking meds for mastitis last week?
ill let you know.

Hi

I talked to my health nurse today and i told her that i thought Kiara wasnt getting enough food cuz she is cranky before and after she eats and just different then if she was having a growth spurt.
So i went to the doc and am on pills to help build my supply back up ( she also said it probably happened from having mastitis and taking the meds which is common) but none of the nurses ever tells me this kinda stuff :(
Hope it starts to work soon.

thats really out of order they should have let u know the tablets would do that!! i hope it all gets better soon for u hun

love to u n kiara xxx

My supply dipped dramatically after having mastitis, didn't realise you'd had it  Have they given you domperdone (sp)?

I didn't know you can take tablets to increase supply. I wonder if they do them in this country.

My supply dipped too after mastitis, I just took to my bed and took Seren in with me. All we did was read (well I read), and feed and nap. It gets the prolactin going which is responsible for your milk production. Also fenugreek is meant to be good for boosting your milk, it is a galactagogue. Others include oats (so eat porridge) and fennel.

I've got some fenugreek seeds in my kitchen cupboard that I bought for that - am worried about smelling of maple syrup though ;) (read Kelly Mom!). There is a grug that you can take in this country, it's called something like domperdone. Drs don't often prescribe it, basically it makes you lactate. You can buy it but it's expensive, so only a really last resort.
I bought some oats today - could do with boosting my supply. Need a turbo charge to help me get through the next few weeks!!

Not bf'ing so cant help - but isn't domperidone a reflux drug? Damien had it :? Don't know how it would help milk supply???

Hi

Well they did give me the drug NOVO-DOMPERIDONE.
Sami
It says on my pamflet used to treat nausea, vomiting, heartburn, or prolonged fullness after meals in certain conditions. It may also be used to treat other conditions determined by your doctor.

So all you guys knew your supply dropped... did the doctors pre warn you it might happen i feel so stupid now.

no-one told me, I had to read around as I thought something was going wrong. Don't feel stupid, health professionals are notorious for not knowing a great deal about breastfeeding and if they do give advice it can too often be wrong. I was told to stop breastfeeding when I first got mastitis, even though the best thing to do is feed off that sight so to be honest if I have a question or my Dr tells me something I check it out on here first as there are more breastfeeding experts on here then anywhere else.

Hi

Okay dont feel that dense no more lol.
I am starting to hate doctors so much since having Kiara all they do with mess with your head and tell you all different things.

Domperidone (Motilium™) is a drug that has, as a side effect, the increasing of milk production, probably by increasing prolactin production by the pituitary gland. Prolactin is the hormone that stimulates the cells in the mother's breast to produce milk. Domperidone increases prolactin secretion indirectly, by interfering with the action of dopamine, whose action is to decrease the secretion of prolactin by the pituitary gland.
