When Charlotte is breastfeeding she is doing it in 3 or 4 stages, falling properly asleep inbetweeen but as soon as i put her down she is screaming for more. It is taking 2 hours just to feed her and i am getting quite upset and down by this. I know she is still tiny but is this normal or has anyone got any advice. I am finding it especially hard at night as i just cannot settle her and do not want to give up on breastfeeding but am not sure how much longer i can cope with this. I feel a bit of a failure :(

First of all you are NOT a failure - will make you write lines if you say that again. Unfortunetly the early days of breastfeedig can be hard, and your daughter sounds very much like mine. She was always wanting to be on the breast, and would be on it for ages at a time, and I would thik she was ok, only for her to start screaming half an hour later. It is normal for a newborn to feed very frequently and to feed for a while. Its all part of getting your milk supply up. Newborns go through growth spurts, the first is usually around 7 days so she could be having this. This means she will be working to increase your milk supply. Have you had your latch checked out? Perhaps ask your midwife for this, and for details of a local breastfeedig group, it really helped me to meet up with other breastfeeding mums.

At night perhaps feed your baby lying down so you ca get some rest whilst you feed.

Massive hugs, you sound like you are doing a great job

My LO was the same (seems like AGES ago now), don't worry it is perfectly normal and now i can fully understand why some people give up.
It's such hard work but soooo rewarding. If you can stick with it, it will get easier- promise.

hi Nikki, I really felt like this too. I felt like Dylan was constantly sucking on me and every time I put him down he would just cry for more and I was really stressed. I just listened to him, and fed him when he wanted to be fed and although it was constant, over the last week it has got a million times better and now I feed him every 3 hours. Dylan falls asleep on me sometimes but I just wind him and talk to him to wake him back up if he hasn't had 2 sides because then I know he hasn't had enough. Also, he was using me as a dummy so I've given in and I now put him in his crib when he's still awake and give him his dummy and he falls asleep so it has worked out really well. I'm quite happy to give him a dummy but only to get him to sleep. It will get better, the first few weeks were a real struggle but I feel so happy now that it's worked out. Good luck xx
