I'm thinking about getting into having one as a hobby that satisfies my need to communicate with people, to have pretty stationary and such.

Does anyone on here have a penpal? What do you like about it?

Ooh pen pals remind neighbours being in school!

I don't have one but I have a lovely story about them.... One of my friends had a pen pal in Australia when she was younger and they wrote all the time...... Fast forward lots of years and they met.... And got on.... And got married!

And they now have a beautiful daughter

I so love stories like this!

Sorry- completely no use to you ljy but had to share x

I used to have an Italian penpal called giovanni. Lol. Didn't last long though. I think about 6 letters were exchanged but that's it. I love the idea of having a penpal.x

I had a American pen pal called John, he was from Pennsylvania, he came over to stay for 4 days I found him VERY annoying! The end!

I always wanted one :) I write I my friends in Australia and Bali all the time but that's just as they love to have little touches of home posted to them .

I'll happily be someone's penpal! I have about 30 1st class stamps in my purse that have been sat there for months lol! and the only post I ever get is bank, credit card, and bills. :-( x

I'll happily be someone's penal too . I do love to write letters :)

There is a lovely website you can sign up to called postcrossing and you get given an address and you send them a postcard it can be anywhere in the world - I used to take part and have had postcards from Europe, America and one from Japan too!

When I was at school me and my friend had a notebook and we took it in turns to take it home each night and write a note/message to each other in it. We'd use coloured pens, draw little drawings and use stickers. I still have it and its a lovely memory :)

We had a notebook like that too , as teenagers it's hilarious reading back on it now .

I had a penpal in junior school, we were teamed with a school in Malvern and picked friends out of a hat. Unfortunately the letters stopped and I lost her address x

My first penpal was from Gibraltar when I was about 8 or 9, everybody in my class was paired with somebody in a class over there. It didn't last very long, but I have had many, many penpals since.

When I was at secondary school and studying German I joined Letternet which is run by Deutsche Post - that was 12 years ago now, and used to be magazine based, but it's still going and has a website here: www.letternet.de (don't worry it's in English!). The penpals on it are from all around the world and you can pick certain characteristics - I don't know exactly how it works now, I think they send you a couple based on your preferences and you can also browse adverts by people.

I also used to write to my cousin on a very regular basis because she lived a couple of hundred miles away so we only saw each other in the school holidays, we've recently started writing again, so hopefully we'll keep it up this time!

We're moving house soon, but once that's all sorted I think I'm going to start writing again because I used to really enjoy it :)
