Is it an ultrasound? i've had 2 different types of scans..the first one was a sonography and was similar to the one they use for pregnant woman..they asked me to come with a full bladder which was agony because i was so nervous and desperatly needed the loo!! the doctor put some gel on my stomach and used a probe which he kept moving while looking at the screen...i didn't feel any pain just a cold sensation when he put the gel on my tummy but it wasn't a very pleasant experience for me because the doctor didn't say a word to me during the whole process. I could see the pic on the black and white screen but was so scared he might be looking at something nasty or maybe come across some tumor or something lol, his expression remained the same and at the end he just told me to get dressed and that he would send the results to my GP. I felt like giving him a slap but just asked him if he saw any sign of PCOS and he just said apparently not but blood tests would confirm!!! i spent the whole week sick worried but blood results didn't reveal anything either...
3 years later my period stopped coming and 6 months later my new GP suspected PCOS again and referred me to a clinic to have another ultrasound...internal one this time (transvaginally)!!
I was scared to death and tried to avoid going the appointment but hubby wouldn't have it! so i went i remember i was almost in tears when the doctor saw me. She was a female this time and sooooo lovely. We had a good chat and she asked me if i was TTC but i wasn't at that time. She then explained that an internal ultrasound is more accurate and would show if there was something in there. I still felt uncomfortable and told her i am very tight down there and can't even insert a finger without feeling pain ..she promised she wouldn't hurt me and she didn't! she used a small speculum which she inserted in my vagina (about 2 to 3 inches) and this time she talked me through the whole thing. I could see my pelvis, uterus, ovaries etc...it was fantastic!! she also told me my fallopian tubes are fine although at that time i wasn't TTC so wasn't too bothered
The whole thing lasted about 10 mn and at the end she said i definitely didn't have PCOS and i should just relax and start a healthy diet. I had my period the following week and they've been regular since
thanks hun for being so thorough it has really helped me try to understand it. i am not sure which one i am having the gp filled out the form and said i would hear from the hospital with a date- she didn't explain anything about it to be honest! its quite scary but if i want to have a baby i guess iv got to get used to my body being public property!
thanks again hun and by the way- you gonna test?!

Yep, just like waterlilie said, hon, including the absolutely BURSTING bladder (the lady even commented on how full it was when I went in there - but they called me in almost an hour late! I was HURTING ). They tried to do a normal ultrasound on me but because I have a tilted uterus she had to do an internal scan, which was fine. She told me right then that I did have pcos, but I think she may have been able to tell me that b/c I'd already had a blood test that showed a high likelihood. She showed me on the screen all the places that she could see cysts, and it was very clear that my right ovary is worse off than my left, which was a bit disappointing but good to know. Good luck, hon!
thanks too melissa. although it is obviously not nice to find out you have pcos it is of course good to know exactly what is wrong rather than just wondering "why is this happening" i'm hoping the threat of an internal examination is gonna kick my body in to working properly!!
xx
I have had the scan's as well. Like Melissa I went (full bladder and also got comment about how full I was ) and was meant to have the external scan but due to having a tilting uterus so had to have the internal. It really did not hurt or anything I did not even feel any discomfort at all. The nurses was both lovely and very chatty and showed me on the screen everything and confirmed there that I had a couple of cysts on my right ovary.
