Hi all,

Does anyone know if self employed dads get any paternity? It looks like you don't as need to be employed but I read something about if you pay ni. Hubby is a sole trader so pays tax and ni like the rest of us, seems unfair if he gets nothing :( x

My OH is self employed and didn't get anything?

We didn't explore it much to be honest though???

I'm self-employed and only very recently discovered that I'd be entitled to Maternity Allowance if/when I get pregnant. I came across the information completely by chance, but it'll be a massive help to me when the time comes, so I'm really pleased to have made the discovery.

I'm not sure what would be the case for your hubby, but I'd certainly be encouraging him to pick up the phone and speak to HMRC just in case (it's difficult to find anything on the website as there's so much info to filter through!) Every time I've spoken to people at HMRC they've been really helpful/knowledgeable about my enquiry, so hopefully they'll be able to answer his questions.

At worst, they'll tell him that he's not entitled to anything, but at least then you'll both know for sure. Worth a phone call?
