Went to get a steriliser and some bottles the other day and was overwhelmed at the choice!!! Would appreciate some help please :)
What type of sterilser is best, a microwave one or an electric one? Also what brand do you think is best?
How many bottles do we need to get and what sizes etc? I originally thought that a bottle was just a bottle but after looking there's all different teat sizes and everything
As usual, i probably sound really stupid asking these questions but myself and my OH are totally clueless with most baby stuff!!!

Thanks girls xxx

Haha!! I feel the same! I bought a microwave one and a friend said she has wasted so much money on bottles and the only ones that haven't leaked for her are Tommee Tippee so I brought that make steriliser that had 2 bottles included but I am assuming I need more!!! I plan on breast feeding so have no idea how many i should buy. Looking forward to seeing some experienced mums answers on this!!

I'm not going to be breastfeeding so presume i will need lots of bottles!!!

My parents reccommended Avent. We got a microwave steriliser from Babysrus for £10 (we havent got much space as you know so we need to keep the the sterilser in the microwave when not in use) and we got a starter bottle set for about £12 from babysrus. If we need more bottles, babysrus is next to one of our local Tescos so i'll just send OH. MrsMc e-mailed me a 20 % discount voucher that I could forward to you?

I've used both electric and microwave sterilisers and found both good.
I've always used avent bottles, they've never leaked for me, I had 6 bottles, all 9oz ones but you normally get a free 4oz bottle with sterilisers. You normally get size 1 teats with the 4oz bottles and size 2 teats with 9oz bottles. Your also need a bottle brush to clean the bottles.
Hope that helps

ive always used microwave but ive an electric one this time, they are all pretty much the same.

as for bottles:

1)anti colic ones i found to be the best as they reduce the air flow through the teat so baby doesnt get much trapped wind, also wide neck ones are alot easier to use as thin top ones i used to get thepowder everywhere

2) teats-you will find they have them depending on age as obviously older babies have bigger mouths but also different rates of flow, just get medium flow for now, if you find the baby gizzles it down in seconds change to a slow teat and this will stop baby getting trapped wind, also if the baby struggles to suck then get a fast flow making it easier to suck.

3) hmmm for the amount of bottles ive got about 10 or 12 that should doas you will have some ready, some to be washed and some being sterelised.

I have the Avent electric steriliser which we've kept from our last baby (5 years!!). We also have kept all his old Avent bottles and teats which are all still in really good condition. I think we've probably got about 4 small bottles and 8-10 big bottles. I think I started him on size 2 teats (but he was 5 months old as I bf for the first 5 month) so you may want to start with this size or get size 1 if you are starting from newborn. Personally, I would avoid the Variflow ones (one that you can turn to get varying flowas) as Lennon absolutely hated them and they were a complete waste of money for us. I always found Avent bottles brilliant and never had a problem with them leaking.

Thanks for the advice girls. So do you think there's no point in getting different sized bottles - do you think i should just get all 9oz ones and medium flow teats?

Does anyone one no of any advantages or disadvantages with either type of steriliser? xxx

Ladies, the voucher mrsmc sent expired yesterday, it was only for the weekend.

Dee i got a brilliant bargain a while back its this set from Tommee Tippee, i picked it up in mothercare for £60, full price is £120!!

i've seen these sets on sale lots so i'd hold out and you'll get a good bargain. this is a great starter kit and i think it contains most of what i'll need, just need a few extra bottles, i reckon between now and the arrival of your bubba they will back at half price again xxxx

Thanks Pos - that set looks perfect for what we will be needing!! I will hold out and hope that it goes in the sale then :)

I don't think theres any major differences between microwave or electric sterilisers - maybe just space? You will need spare counter top space for an electric one whereas you wouldn't with a microwave one but then maybe the microwave ones can't do as many bottles at once? I'm assuming the microwave one would be quicker too although have no idea and I cannot for the life of me remember how long my Avent one used to take either!! LOL.

Ditto! I got this! Came with diff size bottles, bottle warmer, bottle holder, teats, brushes etc.
Always seems to be on offer at sone point so I wud hold off and see if u can pick urself up a bargain ;-)

I've got 4 kids and always found 6 9oz bottles were enough. Don't bother with the small bottles unless they're free in the steriliser etc cos honestly they're a waste of money. I've used avent bottles for my last 2 babies with no problems and an electric steam steriliser xx
