Im getting much better at the booby feeding and it doesnt seem painfull anymore, the only problem now is that when Elora is due to feed she will latch on and milk for about 5 to 10 mins and then fall asleep and stop sucking. I put her down in order to wake her up and then put her on the other side. But the same happens again, she will just fall asleep again.

Is this normal? Its begining to be a real pain in the butt. On the advice of the MW. Im having to top her up with formula in order for her to be properly fed. When shes topped up she will only drink/need about an ounce. It settles her down and fills her up until next feed.

I really want to breastfeed this time, but I just dont seem to be filling her up :( just sending her off to sleep instead :?

Have you tried doing a nappy change before the feed. I used to do this to help wake up Ellie. Other tips are strip them off just to a nappy so they aren't too comfortable, and tickling their feet. I would worry about topping up with formula though as it can effect your milk supply.

Why oh why are HVs advising top ups with bottles this just really messes up your milk supply.

Ewan did the same he would fall asleep after 15 mins but i just used to let him sleep, and he would wake again later if he was hungry. so i would just feed as and when.

There is another post with a similar theme i'llpost that for you.

it might provide some information and good advice.
Using bottles now when you are just getting your milk established is the worst thing as every bottle you give sends a message to your boobs that she doesnt need as much milk so they reduce production!

Sorry Violet for asking this here but why has your midwife told you to top up with formula so she can be properly fed?? I personally would stop doing this and just let baby feed from you when she wants. This will get your milk supply going. Some babies don't need to feed as long as others, my friends boy used to feed for 5 mins yet he was a bruiser. Your let down may be fast, mine was slow so I had a baby attached to me for 40 mins. There is no "normal" with breastfeeding babies. Its actually normal for babies to fall asleep on the breast, and when they wake up they can just latch back on.

If it is worrying you I would put Elora down in her crib or something, she may wake up as a result as its the feeling of being warm in mummy's arms that could be soothing her to sleep. I personally would just follow her for the time being, but I know you have another child and this may not be possible always.

You are doing great hun, sounds like you are doing a brilliant job :D

Thanks for your replys girls. After reading for posts I havent topped Elora up with the bottle tonigh after breastfeeding, but I feel like im failing because my milk just doesnt seem to fill her up :(

I want to keep giving her the breast and use bottles as last resort, but its so tiring when im breastffeding her and after a few mins she falls asleep, I put her down, then she wakes for more and falls asleep again.

I promise you your milk is doing its job. Its so common for little babies to feed very frequently. This is not a sign your milk isn't filling her up, its her getting your milk supply up and going. Seren would feed almost every half hour some weeks, remember they have growth spurts. I promise you though that Elora will soon get into her own little routine and will be more efficient at feeding so she can get more milk out quicker and can last a while between feeds.

While you are finding it tiring, I would recommend feeding lying down. That way you get to rest while she is feeding. Good luck.

breastmilk contains (well all natural milk does) a sleepy hormone that relaxes us when we drink it. Thats why they suggest hot milk at bed time.

Try tweaking her feet or tickling her cheek to wake her up during a feed violet. :)

Well done you for keeping it up too :cheer:

Violet Leorah was exactly the same so I took some of her clothes off and it worked a treat. How do you know you are not filling her up? Leorah only feeds for 5-10 mins and is becoming very chubby.

Well done keeping at the breastfeeding, you are doing fantastic

this is soooo true - alex would only feed for 5 mins max and he was putting on weight like no tomorrow - if your flow is fast then she is getting enough just very quickly! becasue i wanted to get him in routine i would always try to wake him for more but its up to you, after a while my milk slowed down and he started to feed for longer.

trust me hun your milk is doing the trick - you should see alex's chunky legs now - he has rolls of chunk going down his legs and six knees!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

its jakobs copy i really regret using top ups too
