Hi all,

i was talking on another site and some women mentioned that from Feb their hospitals were no longer providing botled milk to new mums for their babies! i was just wondering if any of you were aware of this and if not its a good idea to check with your midwives, as it means we will have to take cartoned milk and sterilised botles with us in our bags. my sister gave birth in Jan and they gave her milk then but this new change is coming into effect in many hospitals this month, so just thought i would warn you all so you can check it out for yourselves.

thanks

Hi kim,

When i had Alfie in Sept last year the hospital didn't provide you with formula milk so you had to take your own.
They did have a sterilizer that you could use but they wouldn't let me use it without giving me a long talk about the benifits of breastfeeding first.
Alfie was starving and crying to be fed and i felt really let down by the hospitals policy....no one had warned about this.

Pip.

oh right thanks for that

im hoping to breastfeed, but will be taking a few bottles just in case.

this was a question i was going to ask my midwife as i wasnt sure whether or not to pack bottles in my hospital bag, but last thursday at my antenatal class we were told everything was provided by the hospital for bottle feeding (assuming you were using one of the 4 main brands of formula, otherwise you'd have to bring your own) and also we would be provided with cloth nappies but not disposables ones. Luckily im bottle feeding and using cloth,so no extra baggage for my hospital bag :cheer:

Gosh what a great question...I'd not have thought about that. I'm seeing the midwife at 2pm, I'm going to pop it on my questions to ask list. I'm planning on breastfeeding if possible (and using cloth nappies) so hopefully I'll be ok but will pack (if needed) bottles and milk also. Thanks for bringing this up.

hi all, on the other site many of the girls were sayin that they were doin it because of promoting breastfeeding but i cant see how it would work because most of us would have made up our minds whether we are breastfeedin or not way before we give birth!! i think it is unfair because i thought that is what we paid NI for, they are supposed to provide patients with food so why are they not providing our newborns with food! i dont mind sterilising my own bottles etc but i would find it difficult if my stay in hospital ends up being for more than 6 hours! hope this post helped and was informative anyway! xxx
