Anybody clued up about mat leave? I was looking to take the whole of September as holiday I've got 4 weeks remaining then start mat leave when that finishes. I've spoken to my manager who's asked our area manager and she's said I'm not allowed to have the whole of September as holiday as it's too long out the company! She's insisting that I take a week of in July and then the rest in September, can they do this? X

I would guess in the case of holiday there's probably a clause in your contract saying something about holidays needing to be approved by line manager first and that it would be at their descretion as to whether the dates you want would be approved. So like if you had a job in accounting or something your boss could insist you were in work for year end, for example. That would also cover things like whether or not 4x continuous weeks holiday would be feasible and would I imagine take into account things like workload, other people's holidays, etc. You're essentially asking for a big chunk of holiday all at once and it would be up to them whether or not they approve that. They would have to make sure that if a male team member made the same request, that they wouldn't be treated differently because they were a man (ie that you're being "favoured" because you're about to go on mat leave). It's a pain, but that's how I see it.

This is all my own assumptions though, and in your shoes I'd contact ACAS as I imagine they'll know for definite.

I think it all depends on the company you work for and what their policy is. I've got 8 weeks holiday leave to take between now and my due date in December. I'm going to take 4 weeks between now and November then take 4 weeks leave from 36 weeks to take my till my due date and then start maternity leave. I haven't discussed it with my boss yet but i know it'll be fine, if i don't do it that way then I'll need to carry my holidays over into the next tax year (we work April to April) and I know my work don't want me doing that, they hate holidays being carried over. What is your due date? If it's only for the sake of a week I would consider doing as she's said and that way you're still getting 3 weeks together. It might cause problems with other staff members like lullaby said. Definitely try checking your maternity leave policy though if there is one! Xx

Yeah I think there is usually a limit to how much holiday you can take at one time.. you could take half at the beginning and maybe ask if you could add the remaining onto the end and carry it over as I assume this will be next year xx

Could you not start maternity in September and use the holidays at the end of maternity (when they've got used to you being off& everyone doesn't know what leave your on it is unlikely to be a problem if it is because of fairness etc)

Technically they can turn you down for such a large chunk but this is a different circumstance as they will be having to start planning your mat cover anyway so it shouldn't really cost them any more money etc.

I would speak to HR x
