i work for the NHS and wish to extend my mat leave to 10 months from 9..im 4 months into my leave now. im worried they are goin to reject even tho policy says it can be done....any suggestions on how to write the perfect letter to hr to extend it... :) xx

Dear _________ Hr

As you are aware we are very excited at our new arrival on the ___________, in addition to normal maternity iv read a policy we at the NHS have for extending the maternity leave period to 10 months as opposed to the usual 9 months, i would very much like to do this as It would give me valuable bonding time with my baby and help in terms of child care in the future, it would also greatly benifit the company as hopefully by this time baby wouldnt need the same level or mother-baby needs so i would be able to worry less when i am at work. please kindly let me know if this is possible. many thanks, yours sincerelly __________

maybe something along those lines?

ahhh thank you =D really nervous as i wanna tell my manager out of courtesy as well as giving the letter and i know they want me bck to work over xmas.... but i dont wanna work my first xmas with baby....xx

They can't reject it, they have to assume you are taking a year and then you tell them (giving at least 8 weeks notice) when you are going back x

whats the link? cnt seem to open it!. i hope they dont but ive signed for 9 months, policy says if i give 2 months notice i can alter the mat leave but the prob is im asking for it over the xmas period....

It's a link to the direct gov website which states what your rights are. I don't think it matters when you're maternity leave falls, you are still entitle to a full year off, I'm sure they will be fine about it, good luck x

I done this and work for the NHS/MOD (under both for policies etc!!) i was meant to return 24th of this month (after commencing mat leave end of jan) but decided i will stay off until septemeber. I beleive our policys stated that we must do this 28 days before the proposed original back to work date, but this is under MOD (very confusing). I basically stated what my original date was and that i have decided to extend this until september. I asked for written conformation from HR so that there are no mix ups with pay etc, which they have sent a letter to both myself and line manager. i hope this helps xx
