hi, i am currently breastfeeing my lo-she is 3 weeks old.

today my right breast felt swolen and tender, at first it was like she neede to feed cos it was too full but gradually it's got worse. theres definately a lump under my armpit so my first thoughts were a blocked duct. i'vebeen applying heat and masaging and getting lo to feed but i feel rubbish.....i'm freezing cold and have a head ache. at first i thought it was cos we'd been out and it's throwing it down but it's getting worse! could it be mastitus or am i paniking over nothing? it's sat teA time so no docs are open today or tmw-what does everyone think i should do-i'm getting worried in case it gets worse-it seems to have come on really suddenly-i was fine this morning!! :(

It could well be mastitis especially if you feel feverish. I would find the out of hours/emergency GP service in your area, call them and go see the doc as you may need antibiotics. It's best to nip it in the bud now I reckon. Also you could call NHS direct 0845 4647 and they can advise you and direct you to where you can see a doctor over the weekend.
Hope you feel better soon

I had that and I thought I was fussing over nothing so I didn't bother going to the doctor. It does go eventually but it is painful, so if you do have the choice I'd go the doctor. If I have another baby and I get in the same situation, I'd go to the doctors next time instead of waiting it out. Otherwise, can you go bra-less for a bit without leaking? Or take some paracetamols?

Thnaks for your advice girls-I understand that if it is mastitus i need to see someone but I'm still not sure....I don't know what to do-I feel a bit better today-just really tired. Surely if it was mastitus it would get worse  I hate making a fuss and going to the doctors if it turns out to be nothing-might try and wait until Monday unless I feel worse today. :D
