When my wife had our first child, she got quite bad mastitis when breastfeeding. We'd read somewhere that putting lettuce leaves in her bra will help with the pain.

It didn't, and so we went down to the hospital to get a prescription. I'll never forget the look on the doctor's face as two soggy leaves dropped out of my wife's D-cups as he was inspecting her.

Turns out that lettuce leaves don't help at all, and instead just end up stinking out the waiting room and attracting funny looks.

Anyone got any tips for dealing with mastitis?

I think lettuce leaves are used postnatally as opposed to during a bout of mastitus and are very effective :)

Does your wife have mastitus at the minute?

I thought it was savoy cabbage rather than lettuce.....

I'm really sorry... I know I shouldn't andone day I'll get my comuppance but  I can't get past thedrs face at the limp lettuce leaves

no advice though, sorry

The advice I read said cabbage leaves too, apparently it helps more when they start breaking down. I've never had mastitis but I had a look for some advice last week for a friend on Facebook. The only other thing I found out is that it apparently helps to feed or express more often if possible.

 I've just read that back

Look away Admin  I swear I know what I'm talking about :oooo:

(3 sick kids in the house  )

The only thing that helps Mastitis is anti-biotics! However, you do have to keep feeding no matter how painful - well thats what they told me anyways! :)

I don't think soggy lettuce leaves would do anyone any good

Savoy cabbage leaves, scored with a knife to release the enzymes, do have a positive effect on engorgement in the early days though.

As the girls mentioned, it's cabbage leaves not lettuce leave that help

Well that'd explain it then! What we'd basically done is made a very poor boob salad!
