Can someone help out a preggo brain here!

My midwife signed my MA1 form yesterday, what exactly is it for? (I can't remember - which is happening a lot these days!)

I've been working for my company since October, freelancing for them, and was made permanent in January. Sooo technically I was preggo before I started working for them officially (which I didn't realise at the time!), which by my calculations means I don't quality for statutory maternity pay, but I think I quality for maternity allowance from the government. *

I've been on the .gov website and read up on it, and it made perfect sense 3 months ago, but when I read it now - my brain can't cope with all the info and working out etc! Also my HR dept is non-existant, and I wouldn't really trust the company I work for to do the best by me, and give me the correct info (but thats a whole different thread!)

* What do I have to do to claim this, is this where the MA1 form comes in - who do I give it too?

If someone knows what I'm on about and could explain it to me like I'm a 5 year old - I would be very grateful! My brain seems to have dissolved into mush!

Ta much!

I think your on about the MATB1 form, i am just sending mine in today!

As far as i am aware you give it your employer, this then sorts out your maternity pay

Ok here goes .....................

Print this http://www.dwp.gov.uk/advisers/claimforms/ma1.pdf or contact your local jobcentre. Note the form is 39 pages! complete 19-39!

Once filled send with your MATB1 and 13 weeks payslips.

Then wait and see ......................

This is based on the info that you claim Maternity Allowance from the government and not SMP from your employer. If you want to claim SMP then give your MATB1 to your employer together with a letter. (Complete the questions here http://tiger.direct.gov.uk/cgi-bin/maternity.cgi and it will give you all the info and the letters, dates etc!)

Hope this helps.[/url]

I would give it to your employer with a letter saying you are pregnant and are taking maternity leave from X til X...

You may not think that you qualify, but the freelance may actually count, and you may get SMP... let their admin dept work it out.

If you don't qualify then they will give you a form saying that you don't and you have to send this form and the MAT1B 9your employer will give it back in this scenario) to the jobcentre with your MA application... (that's what i had to do as i didn't qualify for SMP)

Apparently if you are working and don't send in the form saying your employer isn't going to pay you SMP then it can delay your MA application. So it's better to go via your employer first.... you have to tell then in writing you are PG anyway...

Hope this helps
