I was hoovering the stairs yesterday, using the tube, and the brushes of the Hoover were just over hanging the step. Ben was playing in the kitchen with his car so I thought it would be ok.
Next thing I know Ben is right behind me with his hand caught in the still rotating brushes, screaming his head off.
I switched the Hoover off straight away but the damage had already been done. I few layers of skin had been taken off his hand and it was really bleeding.
I took him straight upstairs to clean it up but I couldn't think straight so I called the MIL to get some advice. She said to take him to minor injuries so they could check it and clean it properly, so I did.
The nurse I saw was worried that the injury was full thickness so she sent some pictures off the paediatric trauma unit at East Grinstead and I had to wait until she heard back.
Eventually she called me back through and told me that these types of injury were treated as burns so she had been referred the paediatric burns unit instead who were also concerned so we were booked an appointment to see them this morning. She dressed his hand and sent us on our way.
We took him down there today and he was examined, thankfully the wound is only partial thickness and should heal ok. The nurse gave it another good clean, applied some sort of antiseptic cream and bandaged him back up. We have to go back Monday to check how he is healing and to see a consultant if there are any problems.
If I'd only paid a little more attention Ben would have been fine, this never would have happened! And now he may be scarred for life.
He's been such a brave boy.
