Hi all,

I am sick with worry and don't know where to turn. My mum has been paying my car insurance since I was 17 (lucky i know) and has suddenly decided to stop, which is fine i am 21 and independant now and need to do things alone. although i have searched around and found quotes for like 180 a month.

I earn 850 a month as a receptionist & am entitled to maternity pay but my money doesnt seem to stretch far enough for me let alone a baby :(

My outgoings at the moment are :

£250 for rent - which by the way, is for a place I can no longer stay once the baby is born

£140 on debts i stupidly racked up when i was 18 - i used to pay 100 but i am trying to clear this before the baby is born

£36 on my phone bill - I realised i was spending more on pay as you go then on a contract

£50 a month on food shopping

on top of this, car insurance is going to cost me £180.00 which leaves me just shy of £200 a month to live on alone let alone with a baby. I am so worried about where I am going to live and what I am going to do. There is no way I will find a place where the rent is as cheap as what im paying now. Asking parents to help is not an option. & my boyfriend is a university student, he is entitled to benefits which he says will go straight to me and the baby but even with this I still worry it wont be enough. As I am working, I feel as though I may not be entitled to a house through the council. It seems nowadays that you need to have 9 different kids by 9 different dads and no job to get anywhere.

Im so worried :(

Please advise whatever you can, thanks so much

Hiya, it's so difficult to advise on what you might be entitled to as everyone's situations are so different. Why don't you make an aapointment with citizens advice or sometimes the social work department have welfare rights surgeries where you can discuss benefits and options.
Good luck!

go down to your local council get on to the lists and bid for a place asap...

You will get certain benefits once baby is born too just look on the direct gov website

Also you can pay less on your debts if you are struggling just ring them or send letters stating your pregnant and need to lower your payments and they should expect it else go citizens advice,

don't worry hun about it all, most of it falls into place when you get things rolling.

as for your partner receiving any benefits unless he is working he wont get any, or if he lives with you your council tax willl be lowered as he is in full time education and classed as a student.

Can't really add to whats already been said apart from the car insurance. £180 a month seems very expensive! Have you looked on confused.com? For me and my hubby its only £280 a year. He is the named driver but if i were the named driver it would;'ve been around £500 for the year (haven't built up no no claims as i only been driving 3 years and we've put hubby as the main driver)

Definatley get some more quotes hun xx

£180 per month? Does that mean you are paying £2160 oer year??? What car are you insuring? To me that doesnt sound right!

That car insurance does sound rather high!! Have you got a middle aged good female driver you can add as a named driver? I added my stepmum cos she's got like a billion years no claims and it brought my premium down by over £100 :)

My OH is also a uni student so I know how difficult it is! He was able to apply for a 'crisis loan' recently when he had money problems...I know it's then more debt to pay off later on but if you get really stuck for cash Uni's seem to offer all sorts of things, definitely worth looking into as some of them even offer grants that you don't pay back :)
