I think I may have found out what Fi's problem is...

(as the title says) Hyperactive gag reflex -

. Everyone has a gag reflex. If you put your finger down your throat, you will find it and maybe find your lunch, too. This is normal, but if a child has a hyperactive gag reflex it can cause problems with obtaining proper nutrition. This can occur in varying degrees. Some children may gag one or two times throughout a meal, and some may gag at the sight of certain foods or other objects. Often, the hyperactive gag reflex is related to foods with certain textures the child finds offensive.

I think this could be it! Fi gagged today at the SIGHT of sweet potato and yesterday she literally had one small spoon of slightly lumpy baby museli cereal and she gagged and threw up. She threw up her tea tonight and she gags and spews anything that isn't a) completely smooth b) fruit puree (shop bought) or yoghurt. She gags at everything else.

Anyone know anything about this?

I think I will take her to the doc and see if they know anything

hmmm not heard of it when I was little I had it with bananas. Couldn't eat them. Just gagged and threw up :puke: Wonder if it is worth seeing a child nutritionist or some kind of specialist because GPs might not know about some of the finer details. Maybe they would refer you.

paris did this until she was 3 -4 years old, she would gag at everything and anything, always throwing everything up :( it did improve though just took her ages to learn how to chew x

Thankyou for the replies :)
I spoke to my HV but he didn't seem to get it. She basically told me that Fi was being 'naughty' by 'spitting' foods out. I kept saying nooo he doesn't spit them out but the HV wouldn't listen :wall: :wall: :wall:

I don't want to give Fi eating issues so i'm not going to force feed her or only let her eat what i want her to eat (as HV suggested).

Fi will throw up sometimes even when she sees certain foods coming towards her!

xxxx

Glad I've found this. Have just replied on your other thread but yes this sounds very like Faith. Definitely get an appointment with your GP asap xx

Thanks hun, think I will do.
From what i've read she should grow out of it but i'm worried about her living off of the same foods!

Our doctors are NAFF there is one nice one but she only works once a week and so i'll try and get an appointment with her :D even if there is nothing I can do it'd be good to have a GP tell me not to worry!

There was a 17-year old boy on the news who'd lived on jam sandwiches only... he was 6'5" and perfectly healthy apparently (he'd been on vitamin supplements too)... so I wouldn't worry too much xxx

Paris still gags on tomatoes now.

Your health visitor is daft how can a baby be naughty :wall:
