Ashtyn sometimes drinks me dry and is still hungry so I was thinking about getting some formular milk as a back up but I havnt got a clue which! Any recomendations? Hes 6 weeks old if that makes a difference?

Hi. A few poeple on here (me included) have had problems with SMA (makes baby sick) and have switched to cow & gate. Although people say Aptimil is closer to breast milk, but I'm not convinced.

Hope you find one to suit you :)

Have you thought about expressing as a way to boost your supply?
Also drinking more water really helps my supply when it's low.

I tried Brody with Aptimil this week to try and get him sleeping longer, but he didn't want it anyway :? I chose it because it has extra stuff in it to make it closer to breastmilk apparently.

yeah and try to avoid too much tea and coffee.
I know its a pain though, I'm always trying to drink more water, at least 2-3 pints a day when I can.

Thanks urchin, ill try that. I really want to keep on breastfeeding so it really paniced me today........it crazy though as yesterday I expressed 8 oz from 1 boob!

Hi Faye

This might not apply to you, but I also thought I wasn't producing enough milk for Olivia - she'd often suckle then come off and be disgruntled as if there wasn't anything in my boob, in a paranoid state I'd then squeeze my boob and not be able to get any milk out so I convinced myself my boob had run out... then on Friday I went to a hospital specialising in sick children, I saw a nurse who is dedicated to breastfeeding and teaches the poor wee ones who have to be tube fed initially to learn to BF etc. I explained to her the above and she said it was most likely that Olivia wasn't hungry and so she was suckling and getting milk then getting annoyed or else she was being impatient at having to work harder to get the hind milk. She said that your boobs can't run dry as your body will just keep producing it, it will just take a wee while for it to get to the milk ducts and out of your nipple. She also said that the baby is much more efficient at getting milk out of your boob than expressing so me squeezing it and not getting anything wouldn't indicated I had run dry!

One night when I thought I wasn't producing enough milk I gave Olivia some formula (this was before I started expressing) and she guzzled it down to then throw up the whole amount - so I don't think she was hungry at all.

I don't think my ramblings have helped at all, seemed like a good idea at the time to reply but not sure it's relevant!

Like Urchin, I find drinking lots of water seems to help me feel more full and the nurse at the hospital told me to make sure my diet is rich in protein, especially in the afternoon to make good milk for the evening so I've made a wee tub up of nuts and rasins and put that where I BF for me to snack on.

Brilliant tip!

I wish I had known this before I stopped bf :(

Faye - he's probably going through a major growth spurt at the moment which is why he's eating so much. This was about the time that I topped up Ella a few times with formula as I thought I didn't have enough milk.

Your milk supply will start evening out soon - give it another 2-4 weeks and you'll be flying along :D

I agree with Rosie, it was around this time that I was still topping up Seren but it wasn't helping as my body was obviously not producing eenough milk so Ii just let her suckle (it was a bit of a bind for a bit) but then she soon settled down. If you are going to give a bottle of formula I would really recommend letting her feed of you first to make sure that you're body is getting the message and then give her the bottle if you feel you need to. Good luck with it, you are doing great xx
