lo is 6 weeks old and wont sleep in the day he is in moses basket downstairs with dummy but ends up fightning sleep and getting so overtired the is a nightmare for the rest of the day - please help as it is driving me mad - I know he is tired as he is giving the usual tired signs. How long should it take to get a baby to sleep in the day? I have tv on quietly in background.
Also at night it can ake up to 2 hours to get him to sleep oftern he falls asleep on the breast then takes himself off.

Welcome to my life every day for the last four months!

Some babies just don't like to sleep in the day no matter how tired they are. Becky has been like this practically since birth - the most she ever slept in the daytime was 4 and a bit hours and that was only because she was knocked out after her first jabs. Usually it's short power naps of up to about 45 minutes a couple of times a day.

What has really helped us is having a place for her to differentiate between day sleep and night sleep. When she's tired we put her in her playpen in the living room (sometimes with a cushion under her but she's always supervised if we do this) and she'll sometimes cry for a few minutes until sleep wins. We don't make any effort to darken the room or keep things quiet in the day. She would rarely sleep at all before we had the playpen and used to put her moses basket in the living room. When we started to associate the moses basket with a darkened quiet room and nighttime sleep things got better in both the day and night time.

Unfortunately when they're that small it's all about eat/sleep/poop/snuggles so you just have to go with what he wants, lots of comfort if he's tired and eventually it'll all come together. Honest!

I swear by the hoover in the early weeks. I'd just plug it in and leave it running. LO would drift off quite happily. I never had the TV on if I could help it. Its not 'white' noise and itsn't actually soothing to babies apparently. Things like a hoover running, hairdryer etc.

FWIW as you have a baby this sort of thing is better asked in the Parenting section in whichever area. Loads of Mums there to reply :)
